Zöe:

Of course it didn't take long for everything to go wrong. I don't know why I had any real hope in the first place.

It started okay. We descended the hill  in a sort of pack. Me and Damien at the head, sword and dagger at the ready. Danny just behind, gripping a rusty hammer that he'd found on the way down. And the twins at the back, protecting the rear of the group.

Charlie's screams echoed inside of my head, so loud, so sharp, so full of pain and fear. It was horrible. No child should ever be made to make them sorts of sounds. It was the sound of a young soul being shattered.

I walked onwards quickly, bowing my head to hide the silent tears that had slipped from my eyes.

My arms and legs were shaking violently by the time we reached the entrance of the cave. My breathing becoming more and more shallow and panicky. The clearance around the large outcrop of rock was completely empty. It was eerily silent. Even the screaming had stopped.

We probably should've took that as a bad sign. Probably should've been more suspicious and cautious. We probably should've known it was a trap.

But we didn't.

Maybes it's because we're still kinda inexperienced. Maybes it wasn't obvious. Or maybes we were all just so desperate to get Charlie back that we didn't even stop to consider the danger that we were putting ourselves in.

That was probably it. I was so hooked on getting my nephew back that I didn't even dare to think that we would be attacked upon entering the cave.

Which, of course, we were.
