Danny:

When I woke, Damien greeted me with a stony silence.

He totally ignored me. And it wasn't until I was finished puking,  retching up gallons of filthy river water- that the other boy finally spoke.

Zöe lay sleeping soundly in his lap, he ran his hand idly through her hair as he continued to glare fiercely at me. “Dude.” He said at last. “What you did back there... It wasn't cool.”

I blinked at him. “It's not like I meant to fall in the river, I-”

He shook his head impatiently. “It wasn't that you fell in the river, Danny. It was that you gave up and wimped out. You let yourself be dragged towards the edge of the waterfall. Heck, you practically opened your arms out and embraced your own painful death.” I nearly choked.

I had hoped that I had dreamed that. I had hoped that the memories of me lying limply in the currents as they engulfed and trapped me was all one big nightmare. I had thought that surely, I must of fought back just a little.

But no. “It's bad enough not to care about your own life. But to put Zöe in danger...” He looked down at his girlfriend, and shifted slightly, as if he were shielding her from me. As if I was a danger to her. “When you first landed, I thought she was dead. She was so still and so pale. She wasn't breathing, she...” His voice broke. “It took everything she had to save the two of you. That's two people Danny. Two people that have risked themselves to save your ass. Zöe lived, but Selena...” His voice broke again. “Selena gave her life for you. You should remember that. And you shouldn't let it go to waste.” He looked down then, staring viciously at the ground. And I knew what he was doing, fighting back the tears.

After a long time, he spoke again. “You're my friend, you know that right? I may act like I hate your guts, but I don't. There are people that care about you Danny, don't break there hearts. We lost Selena. We can't loose you too.”
