Damien:

We hugged for a long time, just holding each other and not saying anything. The silence was comforting. I wanted it to last. But of course, it didn't.

When Zöe pulled away she her face said it all.

Before she'd looked empty.

Now she looked scared, confused and sad. Heartbreakingly sad.

And then I remembered something I'd forgotten in the midst of my anger.

Zöe been crying when she'd came in. And nothing made Zöe cry. “Zo,” I said gently, taking her face in my hands. “You were crying when you came in. What happened with Percy and Annabeth?” She looked up at me. Her big eyes wide and desperate. She looked tireder than she had been just a few hours ago, as if she'd aged in just one day.

“Annabeth's pregnant.” She said, her voice a hoarse whisper. “But it's gonna make her really ill. And she won't get an abortion because she sees it as killing her own blood and she's tired and sick and in a lot of danger.” She was speaking fast, the words tumbling out of her mouth as her eyes began to tear up. “And no one will dare say it because they just can't bring themselves to do it, but- but,” her face was covered in shining tears and she was speaking even faster, like she wanted to say it before she could stop herself.

She took a deep breath, and looked me dead in the eye. “She might die, Damien. She might die.” She covered her mouth with her hands and dropped to the floor. Shaking uncontrollably.

I knelt next to her. And wrapped her in a tight hug, pulling her into my lap and holding her like a little child.

“It's okay Zo, it's okay. Everything's gonna be okay. Annabeth... She's gonna be okay.” She grabbed my hand so tight I thought that the bones would crack. And when she spoke, her voice was stiff and empty.

“How can you say that?” She whispered. “We both know that it's not true.”
