Damien:

“Are you sure you don't want me to take her?” Danny offered, peering over the map to look at me.

I shot him a incredulous look. “Right, because I'm obviously going to let you carry my girlfriend for me.” Danny laughed dryly.

“You, my friend, take over-protective to a whole new level.” I stuck my tongue out at him as he rolled his eyes.

“I was only offering because we've been walking for about five hours now, in forty degree heat, and you've been carrying a sleeping girl for the whole time.” I shrugged.

“Zöe weighs about the amount of a scrawny five year old, it's not really a struggle to carry her.” Danny grinned.

“A little harsh, don't you think?” I shrugged again.

“She'd agree, if she was awake.”

I looked down her now, as she slept peacefully in my arms. Her long black hair was tangled and caught up, and her face was even narrower and sharper than it was before. She'd lost a lot of weight. And she still looked awfully ill. Yet in my eyes, so was the most beautiful, angelic thing I'd ever seen.

But I still worried about her. “Do you think she'll be okay?” I fretted, wiping stray strands of hair away from her face.

“Well, she doesn't look too healthy.” Reasoned a young female voice.

I frowned, and so did Danny.

There was a rustle of leaves behind us, and a small round of bickering. “You landed on me!” Hissed one voice.

“You should've moved.” Hissed another, that sounded identical to the first.

After sharing a long look, we slowly turned around.

And found ourselves staring at two girls. Twin girls.

They were about ten years old, with curly brown hair that fell just past their shoulders and toned, tanned skin. They were totally identical, with big sparkling brown eyes, and twin mischievous grins. Freckles dotted there small, bird-like faces. They were tall for their age, but skinny, still built like little kids.

They wore tattered, dirt smeared clothes, and I noticed belatedly that one girl had a twig tangled up in her hair.

The girl with the twig stepped forwards, and shot us a genuine smile. “I'm Katie Valdez, and this is my sister Brooke.”
