Zöe:

I stood staring at the boy who's been my best friend for as long as I can remember, as he scowled at me- his face full of bitterness and anger. “Damien, I... I know I shouldn't have left but, I needed a break... You don't know how hard it was...” I trailed off, knowing that by his expression- there was no arguing with him.

“It was hard? Hard? What, looking after some little kids for a couple weeks? C'mon Zöe. Percy and Annabeth have looked after them for years, and never complained! But then again, you've always been second best to Percy, haven't you? You've always been almost as good, but not quite. He was the hero, and you resent him for it. Because you'll never be the person that your brother was. And for your whole life, you've always been Percy Jackson's little sister.” I made a choking noise in the back of my throat, but I was too stunned to reply. “I doubt you were even thinking about the kids when you made the decision to leave them. I doubt you were thinking of anyone but yourself. You were just too happy to run off to Danny when things got hard and distract yourself by making out in front of a soppy film.” He spat, looking pleased with himself.

I blinked in disbelief. “Danny? Is that's what this is all about?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady and not show how much he was hurting me.

“No Zöe. This is about you. It's about you being selfish and dumb and heartless. You're reckless Zöe, you act before you think. You tell yourself you're doing it for the people you love, but you're not, not really. You act like nothing scares you, and then you run away when things get hard. You may be the best fighter in camp, but you'll never be the best warrior- because you make the worst decisions on earth. And you know what? It's times like this when I don't even know why I bother with you.” I knew I was crying, salty tears dribbled down my cheek. I didn't know what to do. But my fist reacted before my brain could, and without even thinking about it I swung my fist up and punched him hard in the face.
