Zöe:
Everything after that was a mad blur.
The rest of the group had risen to their feet only moments after I had.
But the boys before us had paused, staring at the crumpled figure laying on floor in stunned silence. Their hesitation made me guess that the boy who I had just knocked out was their leader, and now they had no instruction to go off.
I took their hesitation as an advantage. Being the first to break away from the group and lunge forward.
My friends followed, spreading out, each darting in a different direction.
A small, stout boy broke from his pack and dived at me. I dodged him, jumping to the side. And as he stumbled past me I kicked my leg out and hooked it around his ankle, pulling hard. There was a snapping of bone and he fell to the floor with a groan. I turned to face him, gripping the gun. My hand shook as I held it out, pointing the pistol towards the fallen boys chest.
A week or so ago, I never would've even considered harming a mortal or a demigod. I never would've predicted that I would be standing here; with a gun pointed at the chest of a boy who couldn't of been any older than I was.
I hesitated. I couldn't kill a mortal.
But then, I had to. I had to remind myself that these people were the surviving followers of Gaea. Or more likely, the children of the surviving followers of Gaea.
They had kidnapped and tortured Charlie. They had killed Selena.
This was war, and I had to fight.
I gritted my teeth and placed a finger on the trigger.
“These is for Selena.” I hissed. And then I pulled the trigger.
The bullet hit home with a horrific thunk. An inhuman shriek erupted from the boy's mouth. Blood soaked though his shirt instantly.
I suddenly felt sick, instant guilt washed over me, making me feel dizzy.
I wanted to sit down and sob. I wanted to hate myself. But I couldn't. I didn't have the time. I HAD to save Charlie.
The boy cried out, rolling over.
A knife was hooked though his belt, and without taking another look at his dying face, I reached down and grabbed it, gripping it in my spare hand.
I turned, and without looking back, plunged into the riot of the battle around me.
