Zöe

I paced up and down by the canoe lake, tracing riptide through the clear water. Making gentle ripples through the pool. “Do people ever compare you to your parents?” I asked Damien, who sat sprawled on the floor, watching me with slight amusement.

Damien's mom and dad are Jason Grace and Piper McLean. They are both demigods, Jason a son of Jupiter and Piper a daughter of Aphrodite.

Which explains his incredible looks and undeniable power.

He's not exactly a demigod, because both his parents are demigods, not a mortal and a God. But he's basically one of us, and he fits right in. “Sometimes,” he replies with a shrug, “But not as much as you.” I must be scowling because he laughs at me. “It's not an insult, you know.”

I growl. “I'm my own person, I'm NOT Percy. I...” I'm cut off as he grabs my waist and pulls me into his lap. So I'm sprawled out, sitting on him, with my legs spread over his.

I struggle to get away, but I'm too small and skinny to out-power him.

He laughs again, and rolls over so he's on top of me, propped up on his elbows. “I KNOW you're your own person Zöe,” he says. “You're a beautiful, powerful, hilarious girl.”

He brushed some hair away from my face and smiled, a genuine smile. “And you're my best friend.” My gut tugs, and the next second he's lying on the floor next to me. Soaking wet and coughing water. I turn to see that most of the water has spilled out of the pool, and is now all over Damien.

My stomach hurts I'm laughing that much.

“Sorry Grace, you know I don't do sentimental.”
