Damien:

I held onto Zöe like she was the only thing anchoring me to the earth. I was probably hurting her, digging my nails into her bony little wrist. But I had to keep holding on, I wasn't sure where exactly the chains would take her. But I didn't want to find out.

Danny held her spare arm, with just as much force as me. Zöe kicked her feet into the ground, attempting to steady herself.

None of it was getting us anywhere useful.

Charlie moaned softly, he was lying limply on the ground, eyelids fluttering. “Get him out of here.” Zöe gasped, her voice ragged. “Leave me.”

I shook my head and kept pulling. “Don't be ridiculous. Leaving you isn't an option. Leaving you would be like leaving part of me. No. No way. We're all getting out of here alive.”

Zöe groaned in frustration as she attempted to push herself up off the ground, she fell straight down again with a moan. “You... Have to.” She pleaded, breathing hard. “Save... Him....” I dared a glance over my shoulder, the door was nearly half shut. That seemed impossible. How had it moved so quickly?

I looked back at Zöe, and grabbed the nearest chain, pulling it towards myself. It gained some leverage, and I was able to dive across her- pinning her body the ground.

Our eyes met. And something behind hers changed. She knew, just from looking at me. She knew that I wouldn't leave her. And that there was no getting her out of here. I tried to ignore my breaking heart. “Danny.” She croaked, without looking at him- without breaking our locked gazes. “Danny, please. Take Charlie. Save him. Percy and Annabeth can't loose both of us. He's only a kid. Save him. Save him or I'll never forgive you.”

The other boy froze. He was holding a chain in his hand, having let go of Zöe when I dived onto her. “I can't,” He said quietly. “Just leave you.”

Zöe eyes began to well up, she broke our gaze then; and turned to look at Danny. “You have to. For me. If you've ever loved me. In any meaning of the word. You have to do this. You have to leave us. You have to save Charlie.”
