Chapter 31

Zöe:

I felt miserable and tired and scared.

Percy and Annabeth were gone, and I was dreading going back into the room with Damien and Danny.

And I had every reason to.

They were both standing in front of the bed when I got in there- arms crossed over their chests- faces angry.

Damien softened slightly when he saw I'd been crying, but then quickly seemed to remember why he was mad at me- and set his jaw once more. “I can't believe what you did, Zöe Jackson.” Damien spat, his voice harsh.

I shook my head.

“What I did? I didn't...” Danny laughed cruelly, and Damien joined him. “Right, because kissing me, then going off and kissing Damien within a half hour isn't doing anything wrong at all.”

I sucked in my breath. “That's not fair-” I protested, glaring at Danny. “You KNOW that-”

“That you kissed me?” He snapped, “Yeah.”

I threw my hands up in the air, “I didn't kiss you! YOU kissed ME!” The anger faded from his face, and was quickly replaced with hurt, followed by an even more furious anger.

“Oh.” He scowled. “Oh so THAT'S how it is? Yeah. I did kiss you. But I thought you liked it... Did you?” I said nothing. “Right, yeah. That IS how it is.” He looked at me like he wanted me to say something, but I couldn't- I couldn't force my voice to work. “Fine then. I can see where I'm not wanted. I'll just go home.” He said, his voice tight with emotion.

Hearing his hurting voice helped me to find my own.

“Danny I-” But he was gone. Slamming the door behind him.

I looked at Damien helplessly, I should've ran after Danny- apologising and begging him to stay. But I just couldn't bring myself to do it, too much had happened today- and Annabeth's revelation had made me feel tired, weak, small and helpless.

I threw myself into Damien, knowing that he would just hold me and comfort me and save the questions for later.

And he did.

We stood in each others arms, I wanted to cry and sob and scream. But I couldn't. All I felt was fear, and it was taking over all my other emotions.
