The Epilogue,
Percy:
Annabeth screamed bloody murder, clutching my hand so hard that I wondered distantly if she was crushing my bones. Not that it mattered though. The only thing that mattered was Annabeth. Right here, right now. She was in so much pain that it was breaking my heart, each scream ate away at a little bit of my soul. I wanted to take her burden. I wanted to take the pain away.
But I couldn't. All I could do was hold her hand and be there for her.
She had to survive.
I had already lost Zöe. I couldn't loose Annabeth and these little baby twins. “Come on wise girl, you can do it, you can do it.” I whispered.
“ARRRGGHH!” Came the reply.
“One more push.” Urged Apollo, our 'midwife' for the day. He had come to inspect the birth, because it had been so dangerous for Annabeth to give birth again.
She screamed, her cheeks reddening. Sweat coating her face.
She pushed. One final gut-wrenching push. She squeezed my hand as hard as she could.
And then there was a lot of blood, and crying and screaming.
And my babies had been born.
I gasped. They were so little. Wriggling and crying. One boy and one girl.
Covered in blood and slime. But still beautiful.
I knelt down next to Annabeth and wrapped my arms around her neck. She leant into me, breathing heavily, crying down my shirt front. “It's okay. They're okay. You're okay.” We hugged for a minute. And then Apollo returned with the washed babies. He gave the girl to me and the boy to Annabeth.
“Names?” He asked gently, with a smile.
I looked at Annabeth, and she nodded. “For the boy, Damien. And for the girl, Zöe.”
