chapter fifteen

I was riding my bike alongside my dad's truck. He had woken me up early wanting me to come along down to the post office with him while my mother had some friends visit her. The only reason I was coming with him though was to hang around with Billy and Rover, mostly Rover. Billy was already standing near the front door wrapping the newspaper up with a rubber band while Rover was lying peacefully on the ground until he heard the sound of an engine go off lifting his head up running over to me.

"Woah Rover don't make me fall" I said pulling the brakes jumping off my bike. Rover wagged his tail nudging my leg.

"He really likes you (y/n), what are you doing here?" he asked, holding a stack of newspapers between his arms.

"My dad came here and I wanted to join to see this little guy and maybe hang around with you" I said, reaching down on my knees running my hands all over Rover back and side giving him a few head scratches too.

"Yeah! But I got to do my paper route too if you don't mind"

"I don't I'll come along and help you"

"That would be great. Here" he said, handing me a pile of newspapers. I didn't have a basket like he did so I guess I would just have to carry them in my lap or under my arm. He jumped on his bike already getting a head start while I rode after him, Rover following us along.

"I'll deliver on the left you deliver the newspaper over to your right"

"Okay" I said, taking a newspaper and throwing it. One after another throwing and throwing to the houses along the road. Billy gave me a few newspapers as I kept throwing them before we had both run out.

"Will stop back at the post office but would you like a snack first?" he asked, turning to the left. I nodded my head feeling my stomach growl a little from the lack of food I didn't get to eat this morning and it was getting closer to noon. He took off down to the grab and go stopping his bike next to mine "Rover stay"

I got off my bike looking down at Rover as he kept guard in front of our bikes while we headed inside. I was walking around the back picking up a candy bar as I felt wandering eyes on me. I gazed around seeing Vance taking a glance at me then back to his game. I ignored his lingering eyes walking back over to Billy side who had almost a bag full of candies as he paid for me and him throwing the candy in his basket pulling out my candy bar handing it over to me.

"Thank you" I said, unraveling the wrapper while taking a bite. Billy smiled, grabbing a piece of candy from his bag eating along with me.

Griffin Pov
I was riding on my bike looking around heading to (y/n) house hoping to maybe hang out again. I tried calling her this morning with no answer oh I hope she was home. A black van was driving near me as it suddenly came to a stop with a man wearing a black top hat and some clown makeup with big glasses walking out in front of me stopping in my pathway.

"Hello there young boy, would you like to see a magic trick?" the man gestured, opening his hand pulling out a card. I got excited nodding my head quickly, yes dropping my bike walking closer to the man as he started performing his tricks. He was really good at them. I wonder if (y/n) would also enjoy this. Suddenly he stopped as he sighed walking to the back of his van searching around for something, maybe another trick until he pulled out a spray can.

"What's that for?"

"My next act" he said giggling a bit before wrapping an arm around my neck. I yelped trying to scream as he sprayed whatever was in the can in my mouth, a searing pain rippling through my nose, mouth and eyes as my voice grew distant nothing coming out anymore as the man dragged me in the back lifting me up. The last thing I could see was black balloon flying out in the air.

(y/n) Pov

We finished delivering the last newspaper as I had to get home. Rover was whining a little, nudging me not wanting me to leave as I sighed, rubbing his head a little looking at Billy.

"It was fun hanging around with you" I said, rubbing my arm a little looking to the ground as Billy grew nervous gripping the bike handle.

"You too w-would you like to hang out over the weekend again to help me deliver news"

"Yeah" I said, smiling a bit, getting on my bike waving him goodbye riding down the street. I got closer to home noticing a black balloon wrapped around some wiring cords as I pulled on the brakes looking at the balloon wondering why it was there all by itself until it flew away higher in the air. I didn't think much of it as I headed inside the house taking a seat on the couch laying my head on a throw pillow closing my eyes.
