On day one everyone was searching around for Billy. I went around the neighborhood on our paper route schedule looking for clues to anything by the end I would go down to the station looking for any news on Billy or even Griffin it went on like that for about a few days on Friday though after school I was packing up my bag ready to go out again to search by the woods when I noticed Donna walking to me.
"Hey (y/n) you okay you haven't been yourself" she said out of concern looking at me.
"Yeah I'm fine, I'm really tired though" I said which wasn't a full lie.
"Okay I'll see you next week" she said with a cheerful smile walking off to her friend group. I was heading off home when a boy suddenly stepped out blocking my path. Moose. Robin had warned me about him saying he was a big bully around the school when Vance wasn't around.
"Um, can you move" I said, a bit cold trying to move my way around him as he took another step blocking my path. I didn't have time for his bullshit as I pushed him back walking off. My mom was sitting in the living room when I entered the house dropping my bag on the floor turning around about to walk back out.
"Where are you going sweetie?"
"I'm going to hang out with Finn"
"Okay sweetie stay safe"
"Thanks mom" I said walking out heading down to the woods. I was pushing through branches and bushes searching around for anything. I kept searching around, jumping over logs, moving around some bushes, staying until night started to fall as I collapsed next to a tree trunk, exhausted, my body growing weak, my mouth becoming a bit dry, thankful I had some money in my pocket and the grab and go wasn't far from here. I got back up to my feet swaying a little trying to keep balance, my head pounding for some relief.I walked inside the store hearing a ding like echo from across the store. Vance was here playing pinball as usual but this time he was alone there weren't many people inside either just me, him and the worker who was stocking some shelfs. Where was everyone? My head started pounding again as I strolled to the back looking around grabbing a water walk back to the counter setting down a dollar bill.
"Keep the change" I mumbled, stepping out the store collapsing on the curb, twisting the cap off and chugging the water down soon enough my headache went away after a few minutes of just sitting on the cold hard ground.
"You look like shit" A harsh voice spoke out. I didn't have to guess who it was from the tone and the smell of expensive shampoo.
"Hello Vance" I said, rolling my eyes a little, chugging the rest of the water getting back up to my feet. I wonder why he was talking to me as I looked over to him.
"Do you have a quarter?" Now it made sense he didn't have any money left over to keep playing Pinball. I dug around in my pocket pulling out a dollar bill as suddenly an idea perked in my head.
"I'll give you two quarters if I can also play the pinball machine and see who will get a better high score" I said. I already knew he would probably win but I didn't want to go home.
"Fine" He said, walking back inside the store. I followed after him walking up to the worker giving him the dollar bill in exchange for four quarters handing Vance two.
"You go first"
"Okay" I said, popping the quarter in watching the machine spring to life as always even if it was built back in the 1940's. Vance was leaning against the wall watching the machine. I pushed on the buttons, my eyes only focused on the ball. At one point I hit the ball though sending it up and up before it came dropping straight down. "Damit"
Vance let out a chuckle moving over slightly pushing me away from the machine as he put a quarter in. I got a quick glance at the score of only 8,000, not a lot but pretty good. I was watching Vance play until the ball dropped right in the middle like it done for me. His score was double mine. I went after he was done yelling at the machine pushing my quarter in playing until the ball got stuck in a corner as Vance bumped his hip in the machine. Thankfully it went back to where I needed it to go as I pushed the button again hitting another point soon enough, I heard a ding though as I looked up 10,000 points the high score. Vance looked shocked himself.
"How the fuck-"
"I have no idea" I mumbled moving away from the machine. Vance looked pissed as ever but didn't say a word as he went right to playing another game. I decided it was time for me to go as I walked out the store heading back home
