It had been almost a week since their discussion. Everyone went out of their way to make Lily feel comfortable and at home. Though, they struggled with their natural instincts, they were happy just having her there. The atmosphere was calmer than usual and laughter was now a common sound.
Lily had made herself comfortable on the couch, writing in a journal when Hyunjin walked into the room. He tossed himself back on the couch and lifted Lily's feet to lay them in his lap. "Whatcha writing?" He said as he began rubbing her feet.
"Just my thoughts." She replied as she finished writing the final sentence of her entry. "I've written in a journal every day since-" she trailed for a moment, lost in her thoughts.
"Hey, are you ok?" Hyunjin asked as he tapped her leg.
She looked back to him and smiled hesitantly. "Yea, I'm ok."
"Are you or have you just told yourself that you are for so long that you believe it?" Hyunjin bluntly stated.
Lily's smile left her face, and tears began to pool in her eyes.
Noticing the drastic change in her emotion, he sighed and took her hand. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have-"
"No, you're right. I've dealt with everything alone for my whole life. My journal is the only thing that has ever heard my feelings and experiences. I've always been forced to be ok in order to keep moving."
"Do you want to talk about it? It can't be healthy to keep everything to yourself." Hyunjin asked as he grazed his thumb back and forth across the back of her hand.
"I think I'd like that actually. What do you want to know?"
Hyunjin replied, "I want to know whatever you are comfortable telling me. Especially if it will help me know and understand you."
Lily felt a sense of safety flush over her. Without realizing it, she was pouring out her life's story as Hyunjin listened carefully to every word.
"My parents always fought. Dad would come home drunk almost every night. He eventually killed himself but I was only 8 so I don't remember much about him. But after dad died, she got addicted to anything she could get her hands on. Her drug of choice was heroin. She became abusive. She'd take her anger out on me, and beat me if she couldn't get a fix. A few times, she allowed her dealers to do things to me in exchange for drugs when she didn't have money."
Hyunjin could barely hold in his emotions as she spoke. He had never expected to hear such horror from one person.
"I had just turned 17 when I came home from school and found my mom in the bathroom. She had overdosed. I didn't have any other family so I ended up staying at different friends houses until after graduation. I was already working 2 part time jobs at that point so I was able to get a car to live in. Then I took on a full time job on top of that so I could work my way through college. I was in my 3rd year when I got snatched and brought here."
Hyunjin stared at her in disbelief for a moment. "Lily, how do you do it? How can you sit there and tell me all of that and remain so composed? How can you be so forgiving towards us after what you've been through? How are you-"
"Jinnie, I honestly don't know. I guess it's just my nature. Maybe I don't have a soul." She shrugged.
Hyunjin unexpectedly melted at his new nickname and his smile stretched so wide that his eyes formed into crescent moons. "You have a soul Lily. You'd have to, because only an angel could go through what you did, and still be so full of light. You really are an angel."
Lily blushed and shyly tucked her hair behind her ears. "Thank you, I didn't realize how much I needed to do that."
"Can I hug you?" Hyunjin asked, stretching his arms to her.
She smiled and readjusted so that he could give her the requested hug. When he wrapped his arms around her, her heart began racing. She closed her eyes as she inhaled his scent. She sank deeper into his hug, feeling nothing but gentle warmth.
The smile never left his face as he held her, brushing his fingers through her hair. Within a few minutes, he felt her body settle and her breathing became slow and steady. He smiled, kissed the top of her head and whispered. "My angel."
