Lily sat at the computer station, lost in her research. Her eyes were intently focused on the screen as she read through business profiles and anything else she could find on those who appeared on the list they were provided. She and the others divided the list, each having their own names to research to hurry the process. Despite dividing the names, they had spent a few hours the previous day and were currently in the fourth hour since the start of the current day.
"Fuck!" Han suddenly growled, immediately drawing the attention of the others.
Seeing his eyes frantically fixed on the screen, Lily rolled her chair over to see what had caused his outburst.
"Isn't that Uncle J's wife?" She asked, finding the woman's name labeling her as the sister of the man he was researching.
Immediately, the others stood and made their way to Han's computer to read the information.
"So the fucking guard that's been searching Lily at Topline is one of them!" Seungmin growled in anger.
Chan scrubbed his hand down his face in frustration. "You have got to be fucking kidding me." He exclaimed through gritted teeth.
"Do you think J knows?" Lily asked hesitantly, terrified that he may be involved.
Han shook his head. "He wouldn't do that to us. There's no way he knew."
Hyunjin stood with his arms crossed over his chest. "And once again, point proven. We have no clue who to trust. Sorry Han, but I don't see how we can just believe that at this point."
Han nodded, "I understand, but I know my uncle. He would take his own life before he betrayed one of his own."
Felix sat back in the chair closest to him and asked, "So how are we supposed to handle this?"
Chan pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a deep, exasperated breath. "I agree with Han. I have no reason to believe JK would betray us."
"Remember, we felt the same about Lia." Hyunjin snapped, obviously frustrated with the situation.
Chan glared at him and replied, "I get this whole situation is fucked up, but you need to calm down." He then shifted his gaze to the group. "JK has already been sent everything. He'll see the name on the list. Best thing we can do is act like we don't know for the time being. He said he'd contact us once he's looked over everything. Let's just see how he reacts. You know what he'll do to the guy if he's not involved. That's all we'll need to determine where he stands."
"And if he sees the name- and he is involved, who's to say he doesn't call us to Topline to attack?" Hyunjin argued.
The tension in the atmosphere was thick. No one really knew where to go from there. Everyone sat silently, trying to process the situation. Lily captured the attention of the others when she broke the silence. "I agree with Chan. Act oblivious and see what happens."
***That night***
Lily grazed through the refrigerator, searching for something to satisfy her craving. Her eyes lit up when she found the fresh basket of strawberries. She pulled them out and turned to the pantry, where she found the chocolate frosting.
As she stretched to reach it, she felt a hand rest on her hip. "I got it, angel." Hyunjin said as he reached above her and grabbed the can.
"Thank you, babe." She replied as she took the frosting from him before settling at the bar.
After tearing off the lid and tossing it aside, she picked up a strawberry and plunged it into the frosting. Hyunjin settled in beside her, gazing in adoration as he watched her pop it into her mouth and close her eyes, savoring the sweet combination.
Before she finished chewing, her phone rang. She rolled her eyes and reached into the pouch of her hoodie, and pulled it out. "Well. Here we go." She sighed as she answered the call.
LILY: Hey Uncle J
JK: Hiya Sparky. You got a minute?
LILY: Yea. What's up? Do I need to get the boys?
JK: Lily. If you don't mind. I'd like to speak with just you. We can include the others later.
LILY: Um. OK? Wh-
JK: Just listen to me. I need you to trust me and hear me out. Can you do that?
Lily's heart sank. She normally would have kept the conversation private as he requested, but under the circumstances, she decided that Hyunjin should hear.
She held he finger over her lips, signally him to remain silent, as she leaned into him. With their heads pressed against each other, and the phone sandwiched between them, the conversation continued, with her acting as she normally would conversing with him.
LILY: Yea, sure. Go ahead. And don't call me Lily. That's just fucking weird.
JK: Ha. Right. Sparky, I had hoped it wouldn't come to this, but whether you've realized yet or not, you have information regarding me that I'm actually surprised you haven't discovered yet- or else I'd have you all tearing my walls down right now.
LILY: Uncle J. Wha-at's going o-on?
JK: Sparky, are you crying? We can talk later if-
LILY: No. Ahem. I- I'm fine. Go ahead
JK: Ok. Do you remember the day we met, you asked how I knew what I knew?
LILY: Yea, I remember
JK: Ok well, I didn't want you to know this because I was afraid you didn't trust me enough to believe me at the time. But now you have the information, so you're gonna find out anyway. I wanted you to hear this from me. I'm not sure how-
LILY: Get on with it, J
JK: Fuck. Please just trust me. My wife's brother. The guard that was assigned to conduct your searches. He's on that list. But you need to know, he works undercover for me, Lily. Not the other way around. His information is the reason I've been able to keep you safe all this time.
LILY: I'm gonna stop you there. The rest of this conversation will include my boys. I'll call you soon.
