The hours after Hannah's arrival were filled with stories, jokes, and laughter. When night fell, and everyone dispersed to their rooms, Hannah decided to sit on the beach to relax.
Not long after she situated on the blanket, Chan joined her. "Want some company?"
She glanced up and smiled before trailing her eyes to the glass in hand. "Depends. Is that alcohol? And is it mine?"
He chuckled as he sat on the blanket next to her, offering her the drink. "Yes, and yes."
"Then, by all means." She said as she took the glass, immediately bringing it to her lips. As she took a sip, she cut her eyes to his empty hands. "You not drinking?"
He shook his head as he stared at the moon's reflection on the ocean. "Nah. I took my last drink months ago."
A shocked and amused expression covered her face. "You- seriously? What inspired that major life change?" She asked with a sarcastic tone.
He pursed his lips and glanced at her as she stared at the same reflection. "We all got drunk one night and I ended up starting a fight with Lily. I lost my temper."
She snapped her gaze at him. "You didn't hit her, did you!"
"God no!" He quickly hissed. "You know me better than that."
Hannah threw her hand up in defense. "Hey, just making sure. You were kinda making it sound that bad- just sayin."
He shook his head as he refocused on the ocean. "No. I just- I was a dick. I screamed at her- bad enough for her to call my presence a punishment. I really thought I had ruined our relationship. Decided that night that I wasn't touching alcohol again."
She stretched her leg out and draped her arm over her arched knee. "It's weird seeing you like this."
He laughed and arched his brow. "Like what?"
She swirled the drink around in the cup before taking a sip. "You used to cringe at the mention of a relationship. Now, you're- well- like this. And you're actually happy for once. I can tell you love her."
A proud and adoring smile stretched across his face. "More than you know. She's perfect, isn't she?"
She nodded before replying. "I mean yea- Her taste in men could use some improvement, but-"
He playfully shoved her as he scoffed. "Why are you such a bitch!"
She laughed as she shoved him back. "Seriously though. She's pretty fucking awesome. I approve. But I have to ask- how does all this work? Like- do you not get jealous or anything like that?"
"Oh, absolutely not." He replied without hesitation. With confidence in his tone, he continued. "We all have a mutual understanding and respect for each other and her personal relationships with each of us. No comparing. No competing. No interference. I can't really explain why or how it works- it just does."
He leaned back, propping on his outstretched arms. "To be honest, I actually enjoy seeing her with the others."
She teasingly wiggled her brows as she replied, "Oh, kinky."
He laughed out and rolled his eyes as he shook his head. "Oh fuck off. Not like that. Well- sometimes like that- but-"
She contorted her face in disgust. "Woah- ew. That was a rhetorical statement. Please, for the love of god, stop."
He dropped his head, letting out a dramatic chuckle before looking back at her. "Payback for earlier. Now shut up and let me finish. And don't ask questions you dont want the answers to." He playfully snapped.
"Fine, my bad. Go ahead. And please. Keep it G-rated." She giggled before taking another sip.
"Anyway-" He continued as he watched the faint glimmer of the waves rolling onto the shore. "With what we do- there's always the possibility of death. We've experienced it already, and almost experienced it again a few weeks ago. It's comforting to know that if something happens to me, she's left in the care of others who love her as much as I do."
She pursed her lips together and took a deep breath. "Chris- exactly how much danger are you all in? I feel like you're not telling me everything."
He stayed silent for a moment as he thought about how to answer. He dropped his head, then gave a look filled with concern and guilt. "Hannah. For the first time. I'm scared."
She moved closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder without saying a word. She knew him well enough to know that he would never admit this to his team.
He rested his head against hers as he continued. "Our main target is God knows where. The one we thought we killed may still be alive. And both are after Lily for revenge all because I allowed her to help us shut the trafficking ring down. If I had just kept her hidden, this probably wouldn't-"
She lifted her head and glared at him. "Nope. I'll let you talk, but I won't let you play the blame game. Decisions were made based on your knowledge at the time. Can't predict the future. Can't change the past. Accept it."
He let out a soft chuckle as they resumed their position. "This guy has eyes and ears everywhere, and they always seem to be a step ahead because of it. We're doing our best to live a normal life around all this, but-"
He paused to swallow the lump that was forming in his throat. "She's so strong, Hannah. So fucking strong but so fragile. Her life has been traumatic since before she was born. So horrible that she believes getting kidnapped was the best thing that ever happened to her. You realize how fucked up that is?"
"So it's fucked up that she fell in love with the men that rescued her?" Hannah questioned. "Come on, dude. I saw her smile and the way she looks at you all. Fucked up or not- she seems to be exactly where she needs and wants to be."
He sighed as he nodded his head. A comfortable silence suddenly fell over them, leaving only the sound of the crashing waves.
The silence was suddenly broken when Chan spoke up. "Like old times. Solving problems by the ocean-"
"Yea- I miss the beaches in Australia, but this is good too. Your beach. On your own goddamn private island. Fucking show off." Hannah added, flashing a sly grin. "I missed you, dickhead."
Chan laughed as he wrapped his arm around her and replied. "I missed you too, bitch."
