Donnie looked down at me as he and his brothers reached a manhole cover. As the one with a blue bandana, Leo I guessed, pried off the cover, Donnie's grip on my quivering form tightened. I looked up self-consciously, and Donnie brushed his hand over my hair, smoothing it for me, before his fingers finally came to rest on my cheek.

"How're you doing, Wise Girl?" he asked, saying the name for me that only he was allowed to use. I only nodded in response, my head too full of jumbled thoughts to form an understandable sentence. His mouth formed a tight line of concern, as he stepped over to the manhole, leaping in. The momentum from the descent sent my stomach into my throat in shock, until we landed with a thud into the sewer, sending my lunch back down into me. I silently thanked God I had enough restraint not to puke.

A few twists and turns down the tunnels, and suddenly, I glimpsed subway turnstiles. Donnie leapt through, setting me on the couch. I saw the dark circles under his eyes as he moved toward another room, where his brothers had already gone.

"Where are you going?" I finally asked.

"You seem to be alright," Donnie explained, "But the others might not be. I have to go help."

"Not without me. I'm coming with you." I stood up, already walking past Donnie. Before I passed him, he grabbed my waist, whirling me around to face him. I giggled shyly.

"You're too caring for your own good, you know that?" he said, smiling down at me.

"The same goes for you." I grinned, placing a kiss on his nose and trying to walk away, but he pulled me back gently, giving me a soft kiss.

"You know," I whispered, leaning my forehead against his, beaming, "You're a hopeless romantic."
