Summer finally arrived and Vivian got Jamie signed up for baseball. She sought advice from Jamie's healthcare team to ensure this was okay for him. They all signed off without hesitation.
Due to Jamie's cancer battle, Vivian and Siobhan waited an extra year before he started primary school. The unpredictable nature of it all, learning a new environment and not really knowing the staff at the school made them uneasy with the transition. When he was able, he attended the nursery. With his unusual circumstances, adjustments were made to allow him to continue at the nursery until he started primary school at 6.
The investigation of the nursery and its dealings were progressing. Detectives had arrived at head office to sort through all the paperwork looking for any signs of criminal activity. Siobhan was sitting in her office talking with Vivian over the phone.
"You have Jamie all signed up?" She twisted her finger in the coiled cord of the landline phone. "His first practice is when? Next Tuesday? Wow, we need to go shopping for his gear then— soon!" As Vivian started on her rant about refusing any assistance with getting him what he needs, Siobhan sighed loudly and rolled her eyes. "Look, Viv. I'm his mum too, now. I get to help with the financial part of things. You aren't taking advantage of anything— you're my wife, Jamie is our son!"
As Vivian's voice finally softened over the phone, she heard a deep voice, "Siobhan Serpent?" She quickly corrected him, "It's Siobhan Serpent-Clark, now." The detective nodded, "I apologize ma'am. Mrs. Serpent-Clark, I'm going to need to take you down to the police station with me." Her stomach filled with dread as her limbs felt weak, almost causing her to drop the phone. "Viv, I'm gonna have to call you back..."
Siobhan heard Vivian's protest as she lowered the phone to hang up. She stood gracefully as she picked up her purse and cell phone. By the time she cleared the threshold of her office, her phone vibrated in her hand. The detective escorted her out to his car and opened the back door for Siobhan. As soon as she sat down, she checked the message sent to her phone.
From Wifey:
Don't say a word until Shadow gets there. I mean it Siobhan! That's how Chris avoided jail time. They used something I said out of context and got him out of the charges. I love you!
To Wifey:
I know, I know. I'll be Mrs. Ice Queen... I'm so sorry for all this mess! Everything was just getting back to normal...
From Wifey:
I'm going to tell you this over and over until you allow yourself to believe it... It's not your fault! Baby, all of this is Roger's mess that he left behind and I'm sorry you are getting pulled into it... I'm trying to see if I can leave early, but we are slammed.
To Wifey:
I'll be fine. I love you. Don't stress about this, Viv. I'll see you tonight...
The detective pulls up to the police station and parks his car. When he arrives at Siobhan's door to open it, he grabs her arm pulling her up from the seat. Siobhan's voice was stern, but respectful, "I'm being cooperative. There is no reason to use force." The man looked at her for a moment, shocked, one, that she spoke up and two that he used unwarranted force. "I'm very sorry Mrs. Serpent-Clark."
He leads her into the police station and into an interrogation room. The detective pulls out her chair and motions for her to sit. Siobhan was standing at the door, arms crossed over her chest. She hesitated, but she walked over with her head down slightly and sat.
Lights in the room seemed to flicker and they were dim. The walls were dark, dark enough to almost swallow the little light that was there. It felt cold, void. The detective walked back to the door and turned around to face Siobhan for a moment. "I'll be back soon to ask you some questions. I suggest you be willing to continue to be cooperative or..." He stopped not wanting to be accused of intimidation of a witness/suspect.
