MARCH 28TH

Kol had been staring at the same piece of paper for almost twenty minutes.

There were three sentences written across the top, two completely crossed out, and several words underneath that he'd written and immediately decided he hated.

He took another drink.

Across the bar, Stefan noticed and shook his head. "I don't think vodka is going to help you write your vows."

"It hasn't hurt yet."

"You've crossed out almost everything you've written."

Kol looked down at the paper. "Exactly. Imagine how terrible they'd be if I were sober."

Damon laughed into his glass.

They'd taken over one end of the Mystic Grill for most of the afternoon: Damon, Marcel, Klaus, Elijah and Stefan.

They were supposed to leave soon.

Kol knew that. He'd known it the first three times Elijah reminded him too. Still, he stared at the paper.

He had spent a thousand years talking. He'd talked himself into trouble, out of trouble and, on several occasions, directly into getting daggered by one of his siblings. Yet somehow writing a few paragraphs for Bonnie had become impossible.

Everything sounded stupid once it was on paper.

The front door opened.

Matt walked inside wearing his sheriff's uniform and stopped when he saw them.

His eyes went from Damon to Stefan, then Marcel, Klaus and Elijah before finally landing on Kol and the glass in his hand.

"Drinking hours before your wedding is crazy, Kol."

Kol rolled his eyes and turned back toward the bar. "I hate when people think they're of significance just because they run a small town."

Matt stared at the back of Kol's head. "Good to see you're in a great mood."

Damon leaned against the bar and looked at Matt. He wasn't as drunk as Kol, but he was getting there. "Normally I'd agree with him, only on the Matt part, but do not disrespect this tiny town. Some of us have spent a lot of time protecting it."

Matt gave him a look. "You've also tried to kill half the people in it."

"That was a long time ago."

"It really wasn't."

Damon considered that before taking another drink. "Still counts."

Matt didn't bother arguing. He walked around the bar, grabbed a glass and poured himself something.

Stefan watched him. "You're drinking on duty?"

Matt sat down beside Damon. "If I'm expected to attend a Mikaelson wedding tonight, I'm going to need one."

"Finally," Damon said. "Something we agree on."

Kol ignored them and went back to his paper. He read what he'd written again.

Bonnie, before you—

He crossed it out.

Marcel leaned closer. "You've been working on that since we got here. What exactly are you trying to write?"

"My vows, obviously."

"I know they're your vows. I'm asking why you're making it look like homework."
