Chapter 83 Trolls
Snape walked through the halls, he was feeling very stressed at the moment, he had told himself he could teach Lily’s son, but he was finding it even more intolerable then he had imagined it would be. Looking at the face of James Potter was hard enough, but with Lily’s eyes instead of the man’s dull hazel made it all the worse for him.
He saw Harry walking with his friend Ron Weasley; the two were talking cheerfully to each other and seemed quite happy. Snape frowned at them, the two reminded him of James and Sirius the way they sauntered down the hallway was infuriating to him.
“The kid walks and acts just like his father, an arrogant toe rag.” Snape mumbled he watched them walking. Harry looked to see Snape standing there and looked nervously up at him.
“Hello Professor Snape.” Harry mumbled as he and Ron hurried on past him.
“What is he up to now?” Snape glowered at them as they walked on a few furtive glances behind them. He’d have been pleased to know they were scared of him.
Snape shook his head he was heading to the headmasters office and was not willing to see what that insufferable boy and his faithful sidekick were up to now. Snape gave the password (Strawberry jam) to the stone gargoyle that quickly allowed him inside. Snape knew what Dumbledore had wanted, to talk about Harry Potter and how it was going for him.
Snape knocked on the door, a soft “come in” was heard. Snape open the door and walked softly inside a slight swoosh of his long black cloak as it followed him inside.
“Hello sir, you wanted to talk about the Potter boy?” Snape said formally.
“Yes Severus, how is it going with him?” Dumbledore had a copy of Transfiguration Today out and was looking through it.
Snape looked at him as he started to pace the office. “Where to start the boy is .... He doesn’t really belong here, Mediocre, arrogant as his father, a determined rule-breaker, delighted to find himself famous, attention-seeking and impertinent--”
There is so much more too, I hardly know where to begin. Snape thought angrily. I can’t believe this kid came from Lily it doesn’t seem possible. James must have cheated on her and forced her to raise this child, he is so like Potter.
Snape ignored the voice in the back of his head that kept saying that Lily could get very cheeky with the teachers too at time, and he Snape had adored her all the more for it.
“You see what you expect to see Severus,” said Dumbledore, without raising his eyes from the copy of Transfiguration Today. “Other teachers report that the boy is modest, likeable and reasonable talented. Personally I find him quite engaging child.” He turned a page not looking at Severus.
“Keep an eye on Quirrel won’t you?”
See what I expect to see, humph I see him all right just like his arrogant father, a worthless toe rag who stole Lily from me. Snape thought angrily.
“I shall keep an eye on Quirrel.” Snape turned and left the office his mind in a whirl of thoughts.
“I wonder what that man is up to, as a teacher he’s worthless, he hardly knows the Dark Arts and seems scared of it.” Snape said to himself as he walked down the stairs and out to the hallway. Snape walked back to his office, planning on that night to watch their Muggle Studies turned Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher. This would at least give him something more interesting to do than watch Potter’s kid strut around the school.
Snape found it very easy to watch Quirrel, he was so easy to follow around and spy on it was as though the man was begging to be caught. Snape soon came to the conclusion that Quirrel was after the sorcerer’s stone, and Snape felt very sure he was somehow connected with The Dark Lord. Snape was not sure how he was connected but he felt reasonably sure it was hidden under that Turban. He had known the Dark Lord was gaining some strength since his mark had gotten slightly darker over the last couple months.
he was sure to keep his eyes on him for any signs, of treachery. It also helped the time to pass much easier for him. He was not surprised when Halloween showed up so quickly. He left the school in the early morning to go to the small village of Godric Hallows. He left a large bouquet of roses and lilies for the woman he loved. He smiled at her tomb stone wishing he was next to her. He gave James tombstone a dirty look before he left to go back to the school and teach the first class of the morning.
The feast for Halloween had arrived and Snape had shown up at the teachers’ table, he had seen Quirrel heading for the Great Hall but now he was missing. Snape looked around he was ready to go and find him and make sure he was not trying to get into the hidden area where the stone was. The one thing Snape and Dumbledore had agreed on was that it would not be a good thing to have the Dark Lord return so soon. Or at all if he had his way about it.
Just then a very loud crash was heard. Professor Quirrel came running down between two of the house tables positively shaking with fear as he yelled “Troll, troll in the dungeons, thought you ought to know.” Quirrel sagged to the floor in a heap, as the students all jumped up screaming loudly some running for exits. Snape watched as Dumbledore instructed the prefects to escort the students to the common room while he and the teachers would go check the dungeons.
Troll huh you’re freaked out over a troll, you’re up to something I can tell, I know how well you can handle those beasts. Snape thought disgustedly. He slipped through another door heading for the third floor corridor and where Hagrid’s beast Fluffy resided. He figured Killer and monster killer was a better name for that dog.
Snape open the outer door to the hidden trap door and Fluffy, when he tried to slip inside to wait for Quirrel. The dogs started to bark and one of them lunged their heads at him Snape leaped out of the way of one head and barely dodged the next head when the third head lunged in, just grazing it’s long tooth along his calf leaving a long bloody scrapping cut there. Snape hurried out of the small trap door room, cursing the dog named Fluffy.
Snape looked to see Quirrel standing there, ashen face as he looked at Snape angry face.
Wwwha wha whha ….”
“Time to leave here and help find the troll don’t you think!” Snape said acidly. His leg was throbbing with pain now and that was not helping his disposition in the least.
Snape was pleased to see that Quirrel was now really looking as though he’d faint. He loved scaring the other man spitless.
Snape took a hold of his upper arm and marched him away from the room and the third floor corridor.
As the two walked quickly along the second floor corridor they saw Professor McGonagall walking toward them.
“Any signs of him, we had not seen it in the dungeons and the others are checking the other floors.” McGonagall asked in a very worried voice.
“None, we were just looking for Dumbledore to report in.” Snape said softly in his silky voice as he let his vice grip on Quirrel go.
Just then they heard a loud noise and some screaming coming from a floor below them.
“Oh my goodness,” McGonagall shouted as they ran toward the sound. The three went running as fast as possible and hurtled own the stairs and then down another hall toward the bathrooms.
They crashed in through the girls’ restroom door to see a large troll laying on the ground out cold with the toilets and sinks in ruin. Snape ignored the fake whimper that Quirrel let loose. Snape bent down to check the troll it was out cold, it was he thought unbelievable how they could have done it too.
Snape looked at Harry swiftly, trying to see what was there behind his eyes. Snape was even more amazed as he listens to Hermione, he could see it in her eyes she was lying to save the two boys who had it seemed come to her rescue. Snape secretly admired her for it; it was something Lily would have done in a heartbeat. He then noticed where Harry was looking and moved his cloak to cover his injury. Once they had them sorted out and heading back to their common room. Severus escorted a ‘fearful’ Quirrel back to his own private room. He was pleased to snap the door shut on the other man.
Snape limped back to his office; he didn’t feel like eating, his leg was paining him even more now.
“Your son Lily is doing his best to get himself killed, I have no idea how I am to protect him when he’s determined to break rules and put himself in danger constantly.” Snape said to Lily as he hoped she was there still watching over him or at least taking turns watching over him, Stupid dog. Snape thought bitterly.
