The phone call

Nyx's phone went of for the fourth time in a row, making her pocket vibrate furiously.
She called out. "Um, Magnus, Evelyn, can someone help me answer my mobile? I'm a little tied up at the moment. Literally."

Magnus came in. "I'm sorry, but no. We can't risk anyone coming to break Alysha out."
"Still not Alysha!"
"I know that, and I'm sorry about all your having to go through because of her. But we just can't risk it, not yet."
Nyx cave him cold eyes. "It's stopped ringing now. Can I at least see who it was?"

Magnus sighed, taking the phone from her pocket and unlocking it. "It's from your mum, Rachel. And she's left a voicemail."
"Can I hear it?" Nyx asked. "I mean, it's a recorded message, it's not like I can answer back."

Magnus clicked it on. The message played, filling the silent room.
"Young lady, if you've left your phone at home again, we will be having serious words. I hope you don't need me to buy you anything whilst I'm here, because if you do and you haven't told me, you'll be coming out here to buy it yourself. And another thing, missy, if I find your socks in the microwave one more time..."
A loud, threatening growl cut across the message, making them both jump, looking around wildly until they realised it was coming from the phone.

"What was that?" Nyx hissed in a scared tone. Magnus didn't answer, focusing intently on the phone.
The sound was crackly now, as if it had been hastily shoved in a pocket or a bag, and now the carrier was moving quickly. Distorted sounds came through the speaker, growls and hisses and roars, getting closer and closer.
And finally, a long, agonising scream.

"Mummy?" Nyx whispered in a hoarse voice. "Mummy?" Tears streamed down her face, as she hurled herself of the sofa, struggling with her bonds to get to the phone. "MUMMY!"

Someone give me a hug, quick!
