When Alec turned up at Magnus's the next day, he was surprised to find a disheveled Lady Mater curled up on his sofa, fast asleep.
Magnus groaned. "Just don't ask."

"Oh, I'm asking."
"Short version is, her house got taken over by demons and draugr, and somehow it equates to me having to put her up for a while." He rubbed his eyes. "Maybe I should pay to put her up in a hotel?"
Alec frowned. "Demons took over her house? Why?"
"That's... actually a very good question. I don't know. It's Evelyn. She has a history of making enemies. But I do know that there was draugr as well, which are the zombie-like creatures you encountered a while back."
Alec blinked with surprise. "Those things? I thought they'd disappeared or died out or something."
"Nope. Apparently just laying low." Magnus smiled ruefully. "But, that may answer the sudden amount of disappearances."

Evelyn groaned in her sleep, turning over suddenly. Alec glanced back at her. "It's no good. I think I need to talk to her when she wakes up."

Evelyn was not impressed to be faced with a teenage Shadowhunter the moment she woke up. Even though she'd been convinced she was going to tell the Clave what happened, some prejudices ran deep.
She scowled at Alec. "So you want to know about what happened at my mansion?"
"Yes, if that's okay with you."
She sniffed derisively. "The Clave screwed me over and nineteen years later demons invaded my house."
"Evelyn." Magnus said warningly.
Evelyn widened her eyes innocently. "What? I'm not lying. Oh, okay, I'll stop. What happened, young man, is that a certain Mother of demons decided my mansion was the best place to be her centre of operation."
Alec looked surprised. "What, Lilith?"
Lady Mater rolled her eyes. "No, Santa Claus. Yes, I mean Lilith."
