A week had passed since all of the events that have happened to the Dark Knight. From dealing with school bullys to almost getting killed, he was relieved to hear that Robin had gone to school. The bully, who had hurt the Boy Wonder, had apologized and gave him a new coloring book that was exactly like the one he had previously owned.
The two went separate ways due to their differences and never spoke a word to each other. Eventually, Robin became friends with a young boy who had green skin named Garfield. He was a very strange boy, but Robin enjoyed having him around. He was fun, exciting and filled with tons of energy. He and Garfield would play together during recess. They would color, play tag as the other kids would walk away or would be disgusted at Garfield. Robin never understood why the other children did not like the green colored boy. He did not seem so bad.
During this warm, but cool, spring day, Dick was getting ready for school, gathering his supplies and had a large grin on his face. He was excited to play tag with Garfield once again. The green boy had promised Boy Wonder that he was going to show him something that he can do. Perhaps, it was a simple skill like being really good at a sport or drawing? The boy did not know.
Bruce headed downstairs, his Batman mask still on just in case the Joker awoke. He went into the kitchen and smiled at Dick, ruffeling his hair a bit. "How's my champ doing?"
The freckled face boy giggled softly, fixing his hair a little. He looked at his father and smiled, "I'm doing great!''
"You seem excited this morning. Did Alfred give you some cola?"
Dick shook his head, giggling more. He then ran up to his father and hugged his arm tightly. "I have a best friend! And, he said that he is going to show me something!"
Bruce's eyes widened, his smile grew bigger. He picked up the little boy and held him in his arms. "That's my boy! What's his name?"
Dick smiled, "Garfield! He's super nice and is really fun to be around with, Padre! He and I share snacks together during snack-time and we play together during recess."
"Sounds like a charmer," Bruce said with a small chuckle. He put the freckled face boy down, kissing his forehead gently. Dick giggled as his face grew warm. "I'm happy you like him. Maybe, you two can have a play date sometime."
"Really!? That'd be awesome!"
Bruce nodded as he watched his son put on his backpack, smiling at his father. He was eager to see his best friend again. Dick wanted to know what the special thing was!
"Let's head off to school, buddy!" The Dark Knight said, thanking Alfred as he opened the door for the two. He gave his mask to the butler and heard the door close shut. The two were on their way to the middle school.
After, what seemed to be year-long classes, it was finally recess. The freckled face boy smiled as he and Garfield ran outside, giggling happily. The green boy was being chased by the other, receiving strange looks from the older children. He did not care, though. Instead, he ran behind several trees that were beside the school and hid behind one. He giggled as he watched the freckled face boy try and find him. The fact that the other was green like the scenery did not help what-so-ever.
Eventually, he found him and giggled as he tackled Garfield, the two landing on the grass. Dick rolled off him and laughed as he brushed off the dirt from his pants, looking at his friend. "That was fun!" He exclaimed, smiling happily.
"Yeah!" Chirped Garfield, laughing with a big smile. He then got up and smiled at the other. He knew that the freckled face boy was going to ask about the surprise once again. The green boy was nervous about it. What if he ran away from him and called him a freak like all of the other children?
Dick smiled and tilted his head, noticing Garfield was zoning out a little. He poked his nose with his index finger, making the other flinch. He giggled at the reaction and smiled big. "What did you want to show me, Garfield?"
The green boy smiled nervously and bit his bottom lip, looking at Dick. He then said, "if I show you why everyone doesn't l-like me, will you run away and tattle?"
The freckled boy gasped, shaking his head with a worried face, "I couldn't run away from you! You're my friend!"
"I-I know! But, a lot of people are mean to me for a reason. I don't have any friends because of it!"
"What is it? I promise that I won't run away! I'll tell you my secret if you show me yours!" Dick smiled, his eyes sparkled with happiness.
"Really? You would do that for me?" Garfield asked in a unsure tone.
Dick nodded and smiled big, "of course! I promise!"
Garfield giggled and smiled big, spreading from ear to ear. He then sat on a small tree stump and trembled nervously. He had shown his ability to someone before, but they did not like it at all and ran away to tell a teacher. Dick blinked at the green boy, patiently waiting for him to do whatever it was. He was so excited for this moment.
Garfield gave a nervous, shaky sigh as he closed his dark-violet eyes. He then began to change his appearance quickly, his body forming into a dog shape. Once he was done, he opened up his eyes, trembling nervously at the other. He tilted his head at the slightly older boy and whimpered.
Dick's eyes widened as he ran to Garfield, hugging him gently. He then rubbed behind his ears, earning a small purr from the, now, green dog.
"That's so cool!" Dick exclaimed, giggling softly. "I never expected this! It's so cool, Garfield!""You think it's cool," the boy changed back to his normal self and looked at the ground and gasped. "You think it's cool!"
Dick nodded, "yeah! I bet the other kids are just jealous of you! I love it!"
Garfield smiled big, getting up and jumping up and down with the freckled face boy. "Thank you! That's great!"
Dick nodded and giggled happily, "you're welcome! You shouldn't hide away your talent like that, though. It's super cool!"
Garfield nodded and laughed with Dick as he and the boy began to chase each other around the trees. The strange green boy was so happy to have a friend like Dick to look up to.
