Day 708
Saturday 4th August 2018What a day! We finally found out where the others have been over the last couple of days.
It all started when I was walking around the zoo with Leo, Naomi, Sophie and Auntie Meryl. I saw Roz in the distance who was sat on her own near the adventure playground with a sad look on her face. "Look," I said, pointing over at the scene, "What's that all about?" "I think it's an adventure playground," said Auntie Meryl. "I didn't mean the playground," I said, "I mean her." "Oh," said Auntie Meryl, "That's someone called Roz . . . Or Rob. I'm not too sure. She's a librarian." "No, she's a lesbian," I bluntly said. "Let's find out what's going on," said Naomi. We handed the kids over to Auntie Meryl whilst Naomi and I approached Roz. She looked like she'd been crying. She wiped away what looked like the last of her tear as she noticed us approaching. "Roz, what's going on?" asked Naomi. "Oh," she said, sounding fed up and rolling her eyes, "Will you lot just go away. There's been nothing but trouble ever since you lot got here." "Has something happened?" I asked. "Do you mean apart from me being spied on in the shower and having cum thrown in my face?" said an upset and angry Roz. "I've tried to say I'm sorry about all of that," I said. "Well your attempts at apologising have failed miserably," said Roz. "Roz, will you just tell us what's going on?" said Naomi. "Yeah, where have you all been?" I asked. Roz put her head in her hands, then looked up, raised her head and took a deep breath. "We've been in the bunker," said Roz. "The bunker?" said Naomi, "What bunker?" "There's a bunker under the zoo," said Roz, "Some sort of old world war thing. We agreed that if any infected got in or that if any of us got infected we'd head for the bunker. There's food and water in there. It should last us a few weeks if we're careful." "Are you saying that some infected got in here?" I asked. "Kind of," said Roz. "What do you mean kin of?" said an assertive Naomi, "Did any infected get in here? Yes or no?" "The others came back," said Roz, "Well . . . Three of them left but only two of them came back, and now only one of them is alive." "What do you mean? What happened?" I asked. "The three of them left days ago. . . Well . . . weeks ago," said Roz, I told them not to go. I told them we didn't need any supplies but they wouldn't listen. One of them got killed and eaten outside, one of them arrived back here infected and the other one is so traumatised I don't know what to do." "Someone arrived back here infected?" said a worried sounding Naomi, "Please tell me that you killed them?" Roz gave Naomi a furious stare. "Are you kidding me?" she snapped, "I tell you that one of my friends has died, one of them arrived back here infected and the other one has been through Hell and the only thing you can say, in fact the first thing you say is 'Did I kill them?'" "Roz, there isn't time to take emotions into account when we're talking about infected," said a firm Naomi, "Have you killed it?" "It? Said Roz, sounding angry and upset, "IT!?" You're talking about a person." "Not when they're infected Roz," said Naomi, "They stop being people the second they're infected. If you stop to think, or worry, or get upset, then the next person to get infected and die will be you." Roz stood up and squared up to Naomi. "No wonder you're all on your own," Roz, bluntly said, "Look at you. So hard, so emotionless that even if someone actually wanted to get close to you they wouldn't be able to. You stand there talking to me about people who stop being people. You stopped being a person a long time ago." "Roz, that's a bit strong," I said. "Luke, it's fine," said Naomi, "Roz, this isn't a conversation. You said someone came back here and they were infected. Are they dead? Yes, or no." "You're unbelievable," said Roz, pointing at me, "I mean we all know that he's a complete nightmare with about as much intelligence as my big toe, but you're worse. He puts no thought into his behaviour but you actually think that being like this is OK." "Roz, I know it's tough but when someone gets infected you've got about fifteen minutes before they come back, turn and try to kill you," I said, "We've all lost people we love and we've all had to do things we didn't want to do." "Roz, whoever came back here infected, are they dead?" Naomi firmly said. "Yes!" Roz loudly and firmly said, "OK!? Yes, they're dead. Kyle killed him. There! Are you satisfied?" "How come Kyle did the killing?" I asked, "He's only fourteen." "Will you both just f*ck off?" snapped Roz, "Kyle's been gagging to kill an infected ever since this whole thing started. He's been stuck in here since the outbreak happened." I didn't say anything about Kyle going outside. I didn't think it was the right time. "Where's the body?" asked an emotionless Naomi. Roz gave her an even angrier look. "How would you feel if you had to kill Sophie?" asked Roz, "How would you feel if she got bitten? Would you be able to simply shove a blade in her head or snap her neck? Would you REALLY be able to kill your own granddaughter?" "Yes" said a firm Naomi, "Easily. The second someone gets bit they've got potentially minutes before they die and come back and try to eat you. I'd stick a blade in your head, Luke's head and if I had to, my own granddaughter's head if they were bitten." Roz looked horrified. "There's no place for rose tinted glasses in the world we live in now," said Naomi, "We've all had to kill people we love and if we survive long enough we'll have to kill more people we love. Maybe our own friends, family and children. I'm not saying it's easy, but it does get easier. Sorry Roz, but it's kill or be killed. Now where's the body?" "It's none of your business," snapped Roz, "In fact, anything that goes on here is none of your business. I haven't forgotten all the trouble you've caused. You're lucky I've had all this sh*t to deal with otherwise my attention would be fully on you." Roz stormed off. "Her attention full on us?" I said, "What do you think she meant by that? Do you think it means she's going to chuck us out?" "You heard what she said," said Naomi, "She's got more on her mind, right now. I just want to know about this underground bunker place. Why didn't they tell us about it? It makes me wonder what else they might be keeping from us . . . And remember what she said. Three people left and only one is left alive, so who is this new person and why haven't we seen them? I bet whoever they are, they're in this secret underground bunker. It's like they're hiding them from us. Why wouldn't they want us to see them?" "Hang on," I said, "Calm down. Don't go get al conspiracy theorist again. Whoever this person is, they might be injured. They might be in the bunker having a rest and trying to get over the fact that two of their friends have just been killed." "Maybe," said Naomi, "But why didn't they tell us about this bunker? And getting a fourteen year old to kill an infected instead of an adult? What's wrong with that?" "Well I get the impression that Roz is all mouth and no trousers," I said, "Maybe she hasn't killed anyone since the whole thing started. I think Thomas would be useless at killing the infected, Richard wouldn't have a clue and Alison and Kevin would be too busy trying to see the positive side of things. I reckon Kyle's the only one who's got it in him to kill any infected." "Maybe but he is just a kid that's spent most of the outbreak behind the walls of this zoo," said Naomi. "He hasn't," I said, "Remember when I got knocked out by that kid before we got here? That wad Kyle." "What?" said Naomi, "He's been out of the zoo on his own before?" "Many times," I said. "Well that explains why he was the one that did the killing," said Naomi, "That kid's got more going for him than I realised. He might have more balls than the rest of this lot put together." "Maybe, but like you said, he's just a kid," I said, "A cocky one, but still just a kid." "A kid that did what no one else could do by the sound of it," said Naomi.
Later on I saw Kyle. He was skating up and down the ramps near the elephant enclosure. "Well you seem pretty relaxed for someone who's just killed someone," I said. "How did you know?" said Kyle. "Roz, told me," I said. "She needs to take a chill pill," said Kyle, "Imran wasn't a person anymore. He needed killing." "You've been out loads of times haven't you?" I said. "What if I have," said Kyle, "I can look after myself." "It appears so," I said, "An average fourteen year old boy wouldn't be able to kill someone just like that. I reckon you've been sneaking out of this place and killing loads of infected for ages." "Not always infected," said Kyle. "People?" I said. Kyle nodded. "If I've had to," said Kyle, "It was proper freaky the first time I did it, but after the fifth time, I kind of got used to it." "Fifth time?" I said, "How many people have you killed?" "Not many compared to infected," said Kyle, "I've killed loads of them. If they've been infected for a while then there's head's really soft, so it's easy to stick a knife into their brain. If they've not been infected that long they still have a hard head so you have to use force or you just shove the knife through their eye." "You sound like you know what you're doing," I said. "Yeah well Imran needed to be killed," said Kyle, "He had this massive bite on his neck. I don't know why they brought him back. Alison and Kevin just stood there flapping around like headless chickens; Richard didn't have a clue what to do, and Roz tried to stop me. Silly cow. She said I wasn't thinking. That's what Mum used to say when I was younger; that I acted before thinking. Anyway, this time I was thinking properly. I grabbed a knife and quickly jammed it into Imran's eye pushed it right through to his brain." "So he hadn't turned by this point?" I asked. "No," said Kyle, "But that didn't matter. He was going to. Someone had to kill him and none of that lot were going to do it." "Kyle, I'm not saying you were wrong in killing this Imran bloke," I said, "But you need to remember that you've been out there and you've seen how the infected need to be handled. The others haven't. Roz might have been out a few times and she might have a gob on her but she doesn't find sticking a knife into a person's head as easy as you do." "That's the thing," said Kyle, "You've got to stop seeing them as people. The second you see they've got some sort of bite or cut, they stop being people. Even if they're begging for their life and they look all scared, they're not proper people like me and you anymore and the quicker you can start seeing them as infected, the quicker and easier it is to kill them." It was strange listening to Kyle. I could see his point but I was shocked at how cynical and hard he was being at fourteen. Listening to him explain how he had been able to stop seeing the infected as people and find a way to kill them reminded me of what Naomi had said earlier on. "Kyle, no one knows you've been outside," I said, "You ramming a blade through this guy's head and not seeming too bothered about it might raise a few eyebrows." "This lot don't have a clue," said Kyle, "I've been going out there for ages. The only people that know are you and me." "I told Naomi," I said. "What?" said an angry Kyle, "What did you tell her for?" "It just came out," I said. "She'd better not tell anyone," snapped Kyle. "Take a chill pill as you say," I said, "She won't tell anyone. Anyway, what does it matter if she does? I thought you were a big tough guy?" "Grow up," said an arsey Kyle. He then started to skate off when I called after him and stopped him. "Kyle," I called. He stopped, turned round and looked at me. "Where's this underground bunker then?" I asked. Kyle gave me a sarcastic smile, stuck his middle finger up at me and then skated off.
Naomi and I told the others about our "discussion" with Roz. Everyone wanted to know about this underground bunker and about the new person who was here, but as we discussed our situation Naomi said something that worried me. "What if they haven't killed this infected?" she suggested. "Kyle told me he stuck a knife in his head," I said. "He could have been lying to you," said Naomi, "Let's face it, he's not the most honest young man is he? Maybe they're all lying to us. Maybe they've all been lying ever since we got here." "Lying about what?" I said. "Well they haven't told us about this bunker," said Naomi. "There's a difference between lying and withholding the truth," I said. "Well I want to know who this new person is," said Trudy. "To them WE are the new people," I said, "Let's remember that they've just lost more of their people." "Oh so we're being all sympathetic towards them now are we?" said TJ, "A few days ago we were talking about taking over this place and killing them." "I think we need to find out where this bunker is and find out who this returning person is," said Naomi, "Luke, are you sure Kyle killed this infected guy?" I nodded. "OK," said Naomi, "Then let's chat to the others tomorrow and find out what we can about this bunker and this other person." I am intrigued myself. Where is this bunker and why haven't they told us about it, and who is this other returning zoo survivor and why haven't they re-joined us?
