In a flash, you got ready and called Rosinante, reminding him that you had to go get your dog first and inviting him over in the case he wanted to meet Law with you. You were scared of maybe being a little too annoying by calling him too much or just straight out asking to spend too much time with him, but he accepted immediately, excited about both spending time with you and the dog. Naturally, you agreed to postpone the dinner date to later this same week.
"I'm here for Law." You smiled at the cashier brightly, holding out the little coupon that confirmed your ownership of the dog.
It was a special little card they sold to people that wanted to adopt one of their animals. By giving out a card instead of the actual dog, the rescue centre made sure that their rescues would be going to safe and loving homes, being able to analyse the new owners as they came to pick up their adorable present. At the same time, it added more mystery and anticipation to the one who was to receive the dog. In this case, yourself.
"(Y/N) dear! Finally decided to adopt I see?" The older woman said from behind the register.
Her name was Rita. She was a grandma and the funder of this place, having started the shelter at a very young age and continuing to work on it for the rest of her life. She was an adorable woman and she loved more than anything her animals. It was as if the dogs were her grandchildren.
Adorable.
She knew you because more than a couple of times you had jumped in to help with some volunteer work, in addition to the monetary contributions you gave them on a monthly basis.
"Officer Donquixote!" She squealed in delight. "You're in early this month!" She chuckled, her head exaggeratedly tilting up so that she could stare at the giant.
In early? Does he come and do volunteer work as well?
Yesterday you learned Rosinante was also a loyal donor to The East Blue's Lost Paws Rescue Centre, but he never specified about actually coming here to do some of the dirty work. Although, it did make sense. He was part of the police force after all, something that hopefully meant he actually cared about people and that he valued lives.
"Hi, Rita." He smiled handsomely.
I might just melt.
"I'm accompanying (Y/N) to get her dog." He said, waving his hands around as if to take off importance to the matter.
"You two know each other?" She asked happily, taking the coupon from your hands and scanning a QR code into the computer.
In the meantime, you couldn't really hold in your excitement, eyes drifting away from the woman to look at the grassed covered part of the garden in which a bunch of puppies and older dogs played and ran around.
Except for a smaller, velvety black dog with a couple of grey spots.
Aw, poor thing.
"We've met recently." Said Rosinante with an excited smile, staring at you in admiration.
You hadn't taken long in stealing his heart, but it was still too soon to say anything.
As the two talked, you squinted your eyes at the little ball of fluff. It was a very small puppy, the adorable thing holding a cold steely gaze, almost hurt. He stood rigid at the edge, back hunched over and eyes staring straight at you. It was then when you realized he almost looked like a wolf cub, ears being more pointy than usual dogs' and snout looking a little different than the others. Even though his grumpy attitude didn't really contribute to it, he had a weird type of elegance, similar to the one of an alpha wolf.
"Oh! You got Law." The woman smiled nervously, gaze shifting to the side. "W-well, if you want you can trade him for any of our dogs. It's your choice really." She lied.
Gifts were named for a reason, whoever's name was printed was the dog that was chosen for you and the dog you'd get, but this dog had already been too much to handle for herself and she didn't want one of her top donors to be stuck with the little devil. She wasn't going to lie about the dog to you either. She'd make an exception.
"What do you mean?" You snapped your eyes away from the dog, looking back at the woman and feeling as if you had been put under a trance by the wolf-looking puppy. "Why would I trade him?" You frowned, not liking the idea of trading a dog, it felt weird, as if you were objectifying the creature.
"Follow me." She said simply, opening the door to the giant cage in which the many dogs were contained.
Rosinante took the opportunity and entered the place quickly, right after putting on his gloves of course. Many of the dogs had been exposed to skin diseases, so it was part of the protocol to wear protection to avoid any contagious virus or bacteria to infect either the humans or the dogs' sensitive skin.
You greeted the more playful dogs as they immediately jumped on both you and Rosinante, wanting to get the most human affection they could. Their tails wagged from side to side and their snouts searched for your hands, wanting no less than a pat on the head each.
Giggling, you stroked each dog's fur carefully, happy to hear their small grunts and huffs of pleasure each time your hands patted their backs and heads. Seeing your willingness to play with them, now you were surrounded by a swarm of dogs, their black beady eyes staring at you excitedly, some even bringing you their balls to play fetch.
ADORABLE.
As you squealed and mused at them in delight, Rosinante patted a much older dog and stared at you in adoration. You looked beautiful, and seeing how happy you were as this smelly, some even deformed, dogs surrounded you made him see the pureness in your heart and fly with happiness. A warm smile made its way to his lips, spreading a special kind of joy that would stay in his chest for a long time.
