Hello again beautiful lovely people! I have returned with yet another drawing series update, or another episode of Melody Draws Armor depending on how you wanna look at it. Either way, I draw my girl Maiyu as Athena, goddess of wisdom and war :D
And the good news is that this got my sister's approval—Athena's her favorite goddess so I really really really wanted to do her justice. She's not reading this, but thanks sister (she also got on me for using bases, but if ibis paint provides them, gosh darn it I'm gonna take advantage of it XD).
Now, the reason I chose Athena (and not Hephaestus, which I debated for a bit), is that Maiyu is a very logical person who doesn't let emotions get in the way of her strategies, and she's also highly intelligent with a very good memory. These are things that she uses to her advantage in combat, so in the I decided to go with this idea :3
And now the moment you've been waiting for, and have probably gotten far too familiar with at this point, it's time for me to detail my art process!
Honestly, the hardest part was figuring out the design/outfit that I wanted to do. Like I said before, Athena is my sister's favorite goddess, so I kinda put a lot of pressure on myself for this one not gonna lie here- as it so happens, I finally came up with a design when I was absentmindedly doodling, and proceeded to draw this immediately after. Perhaps it helped that it was fresh in my mind and I had a reference, cause I'm honestly pretty proud of this.
Of course, it also helped that I had lots of practice drawing armor and capes up until this point, too, though there was a bit of debate with the cape color. I decided on red, but a cooler/more muted shade to better suit her color palette as opposed to the more "blood red" that I used for Ares.
Yes I do find it hilarious that I casted her and Hanayo as the warrior gods given that in canon they dislike each other, and yes I will continue to find it hilarious try to stop me XD
other than that, the only big struggle I had was with the feet/shoes, since Maiyu walks/stands on her toes a lot because of her shortened tendons. Did I use the long skirt to cover up my mistakes? That's for me to know and my lawyer to find out XD
Thank the stars I didn't struggle with the facial expression though- I'm getting my mojo back!
Also, I decided to challenge myself and try to shade ombré hair for the first time. It's kind of a beginner attempt, but I'll get better with practice :)
