...hello my lovelies XD
If I had a nickel for every time I was inspired to make sad character art after listening to a song from Helluva Boss (don't judge me okay they're good songs and my friend got me into it) I'd have two nickels! Not to mention it was the same character's song, which I just find double funny.
As a funny little optional game, if you so choose to listen to the song, try and see at what point I was inspired for the chapter title! :3
And if wattpad is still fLIPPIN GLITCHING like it is for me and not showing the video I put on top, let me know and I'll try to remedy that XD
All that aside, the planning process for this was pretty interesting—of course she was my first character so I've had plenty of practice with her design (that's also more beginner friendly since I made her as a beginner hehe). I've drawn her in pretty kimonos before, and I tend to stick to a simple flower pattern, but this time I actually had a reason for it!
I'm not actually sure if I published anything featuring what she looked like as a kid (if you wanna see it let me know), but this design in particular was inspired by her childhood outfit, with the red and gold obi having the same design as the hair tie she used to wear. The butterfly on the back was an extra addition because ~symbolism~
Her design also incorporates a bunch of color symbolism, going from the original purples/reds/gold that symbolize pride/power to more calming blues—to anyone who is sick of me nerding out about this I am sorry except not really because it's important context
I was kind of going for a whole "inner conflict between two sides of herself" kind of thing, hence the mirror (which also took inspiration from a scene in smile precure, albeit subtle), between following the path set out for her or embracing a new life and all the wonderful/painful emotions that come along with it. Cause I'm a benevolent writer, she still deals with this even after becoming a demon slayer, though over time it does become easier/less frequent ^-^
And normally at this point I'd start talking about the drawing process, but it actually wasn't all that remarkable—sure the hair and kimono sleeve took me a couple of tries, and I did have to relearn how to draw tears, but the biggest struggle I had was the mirror and other than that it was pretty smooth sailing!
Overall this was a very heavily story driven piece, which are my absolute favorite because I'm a writer at heart and this is kind of going back to my roots if you will. I hope you enjoyed this (and that you weren't hurt too much)!
