I press my phone against my ear and listen for the ringing to sound. However, all I heard was Sorry, the person you're trying to call can't be reach at the moment. Please call later.
I sigh and call Ally one more time. I whisper to myself "Pick up, pick up, pick up..." and the same voice reiterates Sorry, the person you're trying to call can't be reach at the moment. Please call later again.
I look at my phone and gaze at her contact photo. "Ally, why aren't you picking up?" I whisper to myself. I press the home button and click on messages. I text Ally, Hey, please text me or call me back as soon as possible.
I turn the screen off and slip my phone inside the pocket of my dress pants. I adjust my tie and turn around. I enter the church and sit next to Zayn. My father stood up and read from the podium in front about my grandmother. The stories she told us. The hope and love she received and gave back. A tear streams down my cheek, but I wipe it away instantly. I wanted to be brave for her.
My grandmother was the best grandmother I could wish for. She was sweet, kind, and supportive. She always put her family before her own. I love her, and I'm disappointed that I couldn't be here to share her last moments with her. It's going to be weird not seeing her around anymore.
"...and what she wanted most for her grandson, Liam, is to be happy. But not only that. She also wanted him to carry out her business because she believes deeply that he would do his family justice," my dad concludes, which made me curious.
Zayn and Louis look at me, and I shrug. "What?" Zayn questions. "What does he mean by that?"
"I don't know either," I said. "My grandma never told me. She always enforced me to stay where I was and to follow my dreams." I crease my brows, finding it very odd.
"Well, are you going to stay then?" Zayn asks. "Because what your grandma does is not necessarily a part-time thing."
"I don't know yet," I answer. "I will talk to him about it."
"Okay," Zayn says.
"What's the deal?" Louis speaks up, leaning forward in his seat. "So what if you stay here? I don't see a problem with that."
"Louis, you don't have anyone waiting on you, so you wouldn't know the feeling," I said. "I really hope Ally is okay."
"Don't sweat it," Zayn assures. "I'm sure she will understand if that is the case."
"Have you guys been able to contact any one of them?" I ask.
"Yes," Zayn and Louis answered in unison.
"Weird," I said, lowering my eyes to the ground. I pull out my phone to see if Ally has replied, but nothing appeared in my notification feed. I unlock the screen and see no messages from her. She hasn't yet.
"Why?" Zayn asks.
"Ally hasn't picked up my calls nor replied to my text messages," I said.
"Give her time," Zayn says. "If not, then you can always write to her. I'm sure she wouldn't mind that."
I nod my head and thought about it. After the eulogy, I follow my father out of the room and into the lobby, where he spoke to the guests. He introduces me, and I wait a while before I pardon myself and ask my father, "Dad, can I have a word with you?"
He nods his head and pats my back. He excuses the both of us, and we walk near the entrance. I ask, "What did you mean with what you said up there?"
He creases his brows a little confused until it became clear to him. "Oh, yes, your grandmother wanted you to take care of her business after you're done with school, but since she passed...you can begin taking over."
