I rest my head against the headboard and shift my eyes, noticing two familiar faces entering the room: Simon and Sofia. Sofia held Simon's arm, guiding him along the way. I admire the both of them. Simon had more white hair. Fuller face. More hunched over. He made small movements. Sofia was older, more mature. She resembled Camila so much. And she contained the same smile like her.
The two of them walk towards me. Sofia pulls up a chair and strolls it against my bed. She sets Simon down on it and stands behind him. "Hey," I greet the both of them.
Simon and Sofia gave me a warm smile. "Hey, Ally," Simon greets, sounding deeper and hoarse than before.
Sofia raises her voice, "How are you feeling?"
"Tired," I whisper and chuckle a little afterward. "My muscles are weakening everyday."
"I'm so sorry," Sofia says. "I wish there was something we could do."
"Thanks, but there's nothing that can be done about it now," I said. "It's only going downhill for me, but I made my peace with it. I just have some things I need to say before I go."
"Go ahead," Sofia responds.
"Well, I just really want to tell you, Sofia, that I am proud of what you have accomplished," I explain. "You have a lot of potential, and I wish I can there to see your next chapter. Even though you and I aren't close, I just want to let you know I am glad that you are my sister."
Sofia's eyes puffed, and she wets her lips. She walks around Simon and opens her arms up. She wraps them around me, and I hug her back. "Thank you, Ally," she said, "I wish I would have gotten to know you more too." We pull apart, and she looks at Simon, who stared off into space. "I'll give you guys some privacy," she says.
She turns around and exits the room. Simon examines the room and speaks, "So, is this the famous lake house I've been hearing about?"
"Simon, I think you should know that this lake house was the vacation that Liam and I took during that week," I said.
His eyes widen, astounded. "Really? Well, he did you justice by bringing you here. It's surprisingly peaceful." I was shock to hear him give a compliment. He notices my reaction and holds my hand. "Ally, I'm really sorry about what I did in the past. I shouldn't have outcasted you from the others. It's just...I knew you since you were a little girl, and I wanted to raise you like how your parents wanted you to be raise. But I failed epically."
I shake my head. "No, you didn't. It was me who failed you. I lied to you and broke your rules. I disobeyed you for my own selfish reasons that finally caught up to me. I should have listened to you."
"But then you wouldn't have Liam," he says.
"Either way, I would have lost him," I speak.
He shakes his head. "No. I should have encouraged you to follow your heart and date whoever you wanted to. The only reason why I limited you was because of what you're facing now." I crease my brows confuse. He answers my expression, "Ally, I have hid this from you ever since I found out about it myself. What you're going through, your mother had went through it too. She passed it down to you, and it can only be triggered once a person has too much stress, and their blood pressure rises."
"What did she go through that caused her to have this?" I ask, although I know I will regret it.
"Your father cheated and slept with another woman," he answered, and I knew I was correct. My heart sinks down to my stomach, and I shake my head. "Once your mother found out, she fell into depression, and that caused her illness."
"No," I said. "My dad wouldn't do that. He loved my mom. He wouldn't." But how can I question that? I thought Liam loved me before he slept with Rita. Ugh! The flashbacks ran in my head quickly.
"Your mother thought the exact same, but that only caused her to worsen," he says. "She began to lashed out on him, kicking him out and being violent towards him when he came near her. Her heart was broken to the point where all she wanted to do was die, and once she did, your father, out of guilt, drank and soon reunited with her up in the clouds." Tears burst through the dam and soak my cheeks.
I steady my breaths as possible, hearing myself breathing heavily. "My poor mom and dad. I can't believe love was the one thing that caused them to end their lives. I'm so grateful that you adopted me, Dad. I wouldn't know what I have done without you."
His eyes widen with joy. "You call me 'dad'. You never call me that before," he said as tears spark in his eyes.
"I just never realize how much you've done until now," I said. "And I'm happy I did." He squeezes my arm, and we exchange smiles.
After the moment, he raises his voice, breaking the silence, "And what happened to your parents...that's what I don't want for you. Please forgive what Liam did. He won't be able to live with himself if he knew he was the reason."
"I don't even think he will find out," I said. "And I'll let it stay that way."
"But it's not all of his fault. Some of it is mine too," he says. "I forbade your relationship with him, and it has affected your life."
"It's not, because I'm fine with," I said. "I'm glad I know why you were harsh on me, and I'm sad to know that I failed you."
He shakes his head. "No, I failed you. No parent should outlived their kids," he says.
"But I'm ready now," I rebuttal.
"But Liam—"
"He has someone else he loves," I cut in. "So he's not going to even come here. He's happy, and I'm happy that he is. Even though I am upset at him for what he did to me." Simon sighs heavily, and I wet my lips. "Can you please stop mentioning him? I don't want to hear his name for the rest of my life. I just want to enjoy the company of the people who truly loves me."
Simon looked skeptical but agreed. He nods his head and leans down to my forehead, planting me a kiss.
"I'll see you again," Simon says. I smile and rest my breath.
