I sit down on the bench, rubbing my bare shoulders and arms. My neck felt cold and naked. I lower my head to my dress and trace the tears that fell onto the white dress. I rub them with the paint and dirt.
I hear footsteps approaching me, and I wipe my tears away. I clear my throat and sniff away my stuffed nose.
"There you are," I hear Liam's voice, and for the first time, I felt terrified from the sound of it. I sniff my running nose and kept my head low. I refuse to look at him as he sits beside me. "I've been looking around for you. I thought you would meet me at the front porch."
"No, I'm sorry," I reply. I couldn't help but notice that he changed his clothes from yesterday.
"Don't be," Liam said. He lowers his head to try and find my eyes. "Are you okay?"
I nod my head slightly. "Yeah, I am."
Liam sets his index finger under my chin and lifts my head. Our eyes meet, and his grew worried. "Ally, what happened?" He brushes my forehead and rests his hand on my slapped cheek. "Why is it red? Did someone hit you?"
"Don't worry about that," I said.
"No, tell me," he urges. "I will deal with them."
That statement brought me to a particular question. I ask, "Do you even want to be with me?"
His eyes widen unexpectedly. He releases his hand from my cheek and stares me in the eyes. "Ally, we should talk," he takes his eyes off of me, and I close my eyes, preparing myself from the old wounds to reopen and to be scarred even deeper.
I open my eyes and reply, "Then tell me."
He relaxes his breath. "I love you," he begins, and I was caught off guard immediately by how he is beginning with this. "I just wanted to state that first before anything. Always remember that because I believe the old me would want you to. That guy would not be telling you this but things happened, and I have to stop before they get worse." His eyes grew sincere, and I prepare myself. "After I came home, I fell in love with this beautiful girl, Lennon. She is brilliant. Smart. Loyal. And most of all, kind towards others."
If he only knew...
"She guided me through the dark, and I fell for her," he says. "I know she might seem like a threat at first, but after you get to know her, you would love her. I love her. And I love you."
I press my fingers onto his lips and stop him from saying anything further. "Liam, we've been here before. Go to her. For my sake and for your sake. I don't want to fight over you."
He shakes his head. "Ally, that's not what I want to tell you. I was going to tell you that I...I chose her." I straighten my position, my jaw dropped partially. My heart shatters even more. "I don't want to lead you on, so I made it this clear. I love her. She was my light in a dark time."
And you were mine in my dark time...
I bite my bottom lip and nod my head. "Right," I said, but my anger washes over me. "But what about last night? Our time...you just so happen to be confused still?"
"In truth," he begins, taking a deep breath. "I only slept with you because I was angry that you hid our relationship. And after what we did, I was going to leave you, but I thought you should know it yourself before you wait on me again."
Tears sting my eyes, and the heat hits my cheeks faster than usual. I look at him, not believing that he would do this to me. I clench my fist, but it wasn't enough. I channel my anger and slap his face, which I regret immediately, but I feel more relieved than before.
