Chapter 24

"Itachi, what was it with the guy in the restaurant?", Kisame asked, as the three of you continued your walk outside that village following the map on your book.
"Nothing, he shouldn't just ignore our presence", Itachi said calmly as he kept looking ahead of him.
"That's true, but still, he just wanted to pay for [name]'s food, and that's not something big I guess", Kisame said taking a look at his partner.
"He shouldn't, [name]'s food is also part of our mission, Kisame. He mustn't act as if we weren't there, she could be my or your girlfriend, sister, wife, he should have thought of that", Itachi said giving his partner a side look.

"That's true, but this wasn't an enough reason to draw all that attention to ourselves", Kisame said, looking at you, seeing that you just kept walking silently.

"Sometimes you have to draw attention if that will make others learn not to cross their limits", Itachi said making Kisame just hum in response, as if he was thinking of something...the situation really didn't need all that overreacting from Itachi...he only thought [name] was interested in Itachi a little but earlier, but now...it looks like even his cold partner 'cares', even if just a little bit for this girl [name].

Kisame didn't say anything to his partner this time, he just observed the two of you with a grin, while you just kept walking silently.

The sun was starting to turn orange as night was about to fall soon. You walked some more time, until you found a place that seemed safe nice to spend the night in.
It was a grassy place in the forest surrounded by trees, not too distant from it, you can hear the sound of water trickling from nearby stream.

After having some dinner, you sat near the fire set in the middle watching its flames and listening to those popping sounds timber was making as it burns, while an owl was hooting not too distant from your location.
Kisame was leaning against a tree trunk, his eyes closed and his big sword put beside him. Itachi sat near you facing the fire and watching it as well, folding his right leg and resting his arm on his knee. It was pretty calm and peaceful, gladly there was no wolves or monsters nearby, and even these two guys are being quite nice to you.

"You should go to sleep", Itachi told you when a yawn escaped your lips. You slightly blushed as you covered your mouth with your hand noticing him still looking at the fire, you didn't say anything but just sighed.
"Is there something wrong?", he asked turning toward you as he heard your sigh.
"I should have gotten a tent while I was in that village...", you said in a sleepy voice.
"It's not very necessary, the weather is nice, just lay down there on the grass and try to have some rest", he said calmly, and you nodded, you don't have another option, but...will it really be fine? You weren't really worried about the weather only...
"How about you? Aren't you sleepy?", you asked him in your sleepy voice.
"I will sleep later", he said simply as he shuffled in his place getting in a more comfortable position.

You found it awkward and a uncomfortable, to just lay down on the ground exposed and sleep in the wild with two dangerous men you hardly know near you. Too tired for more thinking, you just laid down in your place on your side, facing the fire and using your arm as a pillow. You watched the fire for a little bit more before falling asleep shortly after.
Itachi's eyes looked at your sleeping figure as you breathed calmly. Your pleasant face and your nice and caring personality, that precious symbol well hidden under the long sleeve of your kimono, all this making you a potential target for so many people, what will he do about you?
He soon put out the fire, laying down on the grass as well, closing his eyes to get some rest as well.

It was later at night, past midnight when you woke up feeling a strong need to pee. You bite your lip remembering that time on your journey to Konoha when you almost got killed or exposed when you tried to walk a bit away from your companions while they were still sleeping.
No, this time is different! You are stronger and just because it happened once that doesn't mean it will happen again, and well...this time it doesn't look like you have a choice!
You got up from your place careful not to make a noise and wake Itachi or Kisame up. The moon was a waxing gibbous which made it a bit easy to see at night. You looked at the two men around, Kisame was still under that tree but he changed his sleeping position, and instead of leaning against the trunk of the tree he laid down on the ground on his back, using his wrapped big sword as a pillow, while Itachi was still in his place as well laying on his side facing the opposite side, as his low ponytail rested on the grass.
You then started to walk away from that place carefully, looking for a well hidden spot to take care of your business.

You let out a little sigh of satisfaction and content, how relieving! mission is completed successfully and none of them had noticed, but before heading back you followed the sound of the water since you wanted to wash your hands and drink some water as you felt a little thirsty.
You finished drinking and wiped the remaining droplets of water out of your mouth with the sleeve of your kimono. You turned around ready to go back, just then, you gasped as you found Itachi standing right in front of you.

Before you could say anything, he quickly threw a kunai at you as you screamed and closed your eyes.

It didn't hit you.
You slowly opened your eyes seeing that you are not harmed or even scratched. Turning around and looking behind you, you saw a snake pinned to the tree behind you by the kunai Itachi had thrown, as its blood dripped down the trunk of the tree.
"You should be more careful", he said in a deep voice, as you quickly turned around facing him, your lips parted slightly not saying anything.
"Just what are you up doing here at this late time anyway?", he questioned you after retrieving his weapon, a bit of annoyance clear in his voice as he narrowed his eyes at you and took few steps toward you, while your face blushed slightly from the question.

"N-Nothing, I was just minding my own business!", you said, pouting and crossing your arms over your chest looking aside in embarrassment. He blinked a few times then sighed as he seemed to understand what you meant.
"You need to stop wandering around at night while people are sleeping, there won't be someone to save you everytime", he said in a stern voice, turning around and starting to leave when it hit you...
His face in the darkness...it looks so much like the one you've seen before passing out the day you have been attacked on your way to Konoha, that same sparkling around his neck, his necklace, could he be the same person who saved you that night?

"Itachi? What do you mean? How do you know I have been attacked at night before?", you asked suspiciously, making him stop in his tracks as his eyes slightly widened, something you didn't see since he was facing the opposite side.
"Nothing, I never said that. I just said you need to stop doing what you have just done now. Now, quite talking and let's get back", he said turning around and looking at you. 

It was pointless to ask him more, but it was also obvious he avoided your question. You sighed as you just followed him back to where the three of you have been spending the night.
