Chapter 3

Gwil sees Ben through the bushes a little further on.
He's in the middle of the long bridge, just staring down at the water below. The boy is so deep in thought that he doesn't hear Gwil approaching until the tall boy is right behind him. Ben slightly jumps and turns around.
Gwil can see from his red eyes that his best friend has been crying. He stands next to Ben on the bridge, but says nothing yet.
'How did you know I was here?' Ben is the first to break the silence.
'I know my friends. Are you all right? You were suddenly gone.' Gwil puts his hand on Ben's shoulder to show he doesn't have to worry.
Ben smiles weakly at Gwil, but doesn't answer the question.
'Where's Joe? Is he alright? And Rami?' The blond suddenly asks.
Gwil sees the stress reflecting in his green eyes. 'Calm down, Joe is asleep in the car. Rami is with him.' He says reassuringly.
He sees that Ben is shivering completely. 'Come here buddy, we're gonna warm you up a bit. It's way too cold outside. Especially here above the water.'
Ben smiles gratefully and nods.
Gwil gives the boy his coat, and together they walk back towards the car.
When they're only 5 minutes from the car, Gwil decides to ask what's going on. 'Will you now tell me why you left, and I found you half crying on the bridge?'
Ben sighs deeply, but says nothing.
'If you really don't want to, that's okay. But I know better than anyone else that talking helps.' Gwil tries to convince him.
Ben nods and takes a deep breath. 'Rami and certainly Joe may not know about this, promise?' He says softly.
Gwil nods.
'I was just so worried it would be more serious than the flu. I don't want to lose Joe, you know. I once lost a...-' Ben already feels tears rising, and stops speaking. He can't do it. He can't tell Gwil about it.
Gwil stops walking and gives Ben a questioning look. 'You once lost a what?'
Ben shakes his head. 'N-nevermind. Just forget about it, okay?' He says as he wipes away his tears.
Gwil decides to let it go, and nods. He pulls the blond boy into a hug. 'He'll be fine, believe me. Joe is a strong one.'
Ben lets go of the hug, and lets out a small laugh.
Gwil doesn't understand and gives him a quizzical look.
'Brian said that too.' Ben says.
Then Gwil laughs too. 'I told you I studied him.' Fortunately, Gwil's jokes make Ben smile a little more already. 'Well come on. Let's go to Rami and Joe. The director has given us a day off, so we can rest from this hard day.'
Ben nods and together they walk back to their other friends.

Once arrived at the car, the two actors see that Rami has sat down against the door of the car. Again, he gestures that they should be quiet.
'Apparently is Joe still asleep in the backseat. If you go check on him, I'll tell Rami can leave for the hotel.' Gwil says to Ben.
The latter nods and opens the car door trying not to make too much noise. But that's in vein, because it has already awakened Joe. But the ginger pretends to still be asleep, hoping Ben will take such good care of him again.
Ben feels again if the fever is already gone by putting his hand on the boy's forehead.
Joe feels his heart warming inside again.
'Don't worry buddy. I'm gonna take care of you, so you will be that happy boy again soon.' Ben gently runs his fingers through Joe's hair.
'I wish I could say this to you when you could hear me. But I'm too cowardly to have a proper conversation with you. I'm sorry buddy.' He whispers afterwards. He takes a deep breath and shakes Joe gently to wake him up.
After a while, Joe's eyes slowly open.
'Well good morning sleepyhead. Again. We are about to drive to the hotel, so you really have to wake up. I don't want you to get car sick or something.' Ben says with a caring smile.
Joe rubs his eyes, sits up, and nods.
'I'll go tell Rami and Gwil we can go.' With those words, Ben gets out of the car.

A little way from the car, Rami and Gwilym are talking to each other.
'So?' Rami asks curiously.
'So what?' Gwil already knows where this conversation is going, but he has promised not to say anything.
'Why was Ben suddenly gone?' Rami is getting more and more impatient and bursting with curiosity.
'Oh that. There was nothing wrong at all. Ben was just a bit stuffy after all those hours in the trailer. Quite logical, those things aren't that big, you know.' Gwil says with a nervous smile.
Rami is just about to say something to that when he sees Ben coming.
The blond joins his two fellow actors and looks from Gwil to Rami. 'Uhm Joe is awake, so we can leave for the hotel.' He points at the car.
'Great! I'll drive.' Rami searches in his pocket for the car keys.
'Looking for these? With a grin Gwil shows him the car keys.
'Stop teasing me like that Gwil.' Rami says indignantly. He takes the keys from Gwil, and walks to the car.
'Did you tell him?' Ben asks anxious and a little angry.
Gwil shakes his head. 'No of course not. I said you just needed some fresh air after all those hours in that trailer. After all, I promised not to say anything, right?'
Ben nods relieved.
'Well let's go to the hotel. I feel like a movie night with popcorn, what about you?' Gwil says with a wink. Ben nods, and together they walk to the car.

The car remains quiet throughout the journey.
'Time for some music, don't you guys think?' Gwil tries to dispel the silence.
'Yes! Good idea.' Rami says in agreement.
'Uhm yeah sounds good, but don't turn the radio too loud.' While Ben says this, he points to Joe, who has fallen asleep again. He must admit that it looks very cute. Joe has wrapped himself in the blankets that were in the back of the car. The only thing that rises above the blanket are Joe's eyes, which are peacefully closed.
Gwil is about to say that it's not normal for someone to sleep so much on one day, but changes his mind. He doesn't want to worry Ben.
Just before Rami can turn the radio on, they all get startled by a loud coughing and groaning coming from Joe.
Gwil sees in the rearview mirror that Ben's eyes fill with tears.
The boy is staring out of his window and bites his lip trying not to let Rami know he's about to cry.
'Hey uhm Rami, shall we stop at that gas station? I think Joe would like a drink when he wakes up.' Gwil asks.
'But, we'll be at the hotel in ten minutes. And by the looks of it, he won't wake up until we get there, I think.' The black-haired boy says.
Gwil gives Rami a penetrating look.
'But of course we can always stop.' Rami quickly adds afterwards.
