Chapter 10

Rami and Gwil sit down on the edge of Ben's bed, and look tensely at the doctor.
Brian takes a seat in the chair next to Roger's, sharing a worried look with his friend.
'I have some good news and some slightly worse news.' The doctor begins. 'The good news is that he hasn't contracted a virus that has affected his immune system. Which means you can go to him soon.'
Everyone breathes a sigh of relief. '
And the bad news?' Ben asks as he looks anxiously at the doctor.
'He has an influenza, which is the medical term for the dangerous flu. It is an infection that is accompanied by many headaches, muscle pain, coughing, and cold symptoms. Fortunately, Mr Mazzello has very strong lungs, so it will not be life-threatening for him. He has to stay in the hospital for the next week so that the medication can work. We can move his bed into this room if you want? I happen to know you'll be here for at least a week as well. It might be nicer to have some compagny.' The doctor asks with his eyes on Ben.
The blond immediately nods. Of course he want that. He wants nothing more than to be with Joe right now. Although he has to hide his crush on his best friend.
'I'll go get him then.' The doctor says with a friendly smile before he leaves the room.

As soon as he Joe's bed gets pushed into the room, the ginger's friends see that he is sleeping. Joe also has an IV attached to his hand, probably with the flu medication. His whole face is covered with plasters, because of the shards of glass that flew around.
'We had to stitch in two places on his face because of the deep wounds left by the shards.' The doctor explains. 'He is woken up by one of the nurses every hour to see if his lungs are still functioning properly.'
They all nod, saying that they understood the explaination.
'Thank you very much doctor.' Brian says with a relieved smile.
The doctor smiles and leaves the room.

Joe wakes up to the sound of the door closing. He slowly opens his eyes.
'Hi Joe.' Roger sees that Joe has woken up.
Ben immediately gets up and walks over to Joe's bed.
'Ben, you aren't allowed to get up yet, you are still too weak for that.' Gwil says with a worried look.
But Ben stubbornly shrugs, walking on towards Joe's bed.
When Rami notices that the blond is about to faint, he comes to his aid and supports him to walk.
'I'm fine, I'm fine.' Ben mumbles.
Joe starts looking around the room in confusion and in panic.
'Calm down Joe, we're with you.' Brian sees the frightened look in his eyes.
'You're in the hospital.' Roger adds softly.
Joe tries to sit up, but immediately a shot of pain runs through his whole body.
'Just keep lying down. We won't leave you alone.' Ben whispers soothingly, now arriving at Joe's bed.
Joe looks at Ben, then sees that his hand is bandaged. 'You're injured.' He whispers. For the first time this night, Joe speaks again.
Ben lets out a soft chuckle. 'It's not about me now, it's about you, silly.' He would love to hug Joe right now and run his hand through his hair, but he controls himself.
'W-what time is it?' Joe says as he searches the room for a clock.
Ben looks at Rami questioningly.
The black-haired boy checks his watch. '04.15 am.'
Joe's eyes widen slightly. 'How long have I been here?' He has so many questions to asks right now.
'A little less than two hours I believe. Do you remember anything from this night?' Gwil asks.
Joe shakes his head. 'Not really.' He mumbles.
A brief silence falls.
'Could you please leave me and Ben alone for a moment?' Joe asks, his voice nearly above a whisper.
Ben looks at him in surprise.
The others all nod.
'Of course.' Brian gestures to Roger, Gwil and Rami to come along.

The door closes and Joe looks at Ben. 'You were with my in my room this night. Please tell me what happened to me. Every detail.' The ginger says.
Ben doubts whether he should do that. But Joe has the right to know what happened.
Ben takes a deep breath. 'Okay then.'

While Ben tells what happened, the others are waiting in the hallway.
'Is it just me, or do the two like each other?' Roger grins when asking this question.
'Rog.' Brian says with a sigh and an eye roll. 'Not everyone who are best friends immediately like each other.'
Gwil and Rami laugh at that.
'No Bri, he's right. On the way to the hospital, Ben admitted that he likes Joe.' Rami says with a big smile.
'And according to me Joe likes him too.' Gwil adds with a smirk.
'In other words, we are going to play matchmakers.' Roger grins even more.

Back in the room, Ben has finished his story.
'Now I remember! I was looking for painkillers and sleeping pills. Then I got dizzy. Not long after that it turned black before my eyes.' Joe thinks back to a few hours ago and shivers.
Ben sits down on Joe's bed and gently puts his arm around the boy. 'Fortunately, you are now okay again, and it is no more serious.'
Joe nods. He yawns and looks at Ben, trying really hard to keep his eyes open. 'Will you tell me now what happened to you?'
Ben shakes his head. 'Let's go to sleep first. It's been a rough night for both of us. Tomorrow I'll tell you everything, I promise.'
Joe yawns again and nods.
Ben wants to get up to go to his own bed, but Joe stops him. 'W-wait. Can you please stay with me a little longer? I'm so scared.' The ginger whispers.
Ben smiles and nods. 'Of course.'

The others are still waiting in the hallway, but see a nurse approaching them. 'Hi, I'm here for their check up. Can I go in?' She asks kindly.
Brian nods. 'Yeah, I think we can go back in now.' He says. The others nod in agreement.
The nurse knocks softly on the door, but doesn't hear anything.
When they all go in, they see why it's so quiet in the room. Ben and Joe are both fast asleep in Joe's bed.
Ben's hand is wrapped around Joe's small frame, and the ginger has his head on Ben's chest.
'It looks like your plan is no longer necessary.' Gwil whispers to Roger with a grin.
'We should go, they need their rest.' Rami says. The others nod in agreement.
'Can you tell them we'll be back in the morning?' Gwil asks the nurse. She smiles and nods.
'Good night boys.' Brian whispers softly before leaving the room.
