Chapter 43

'Which one of you is Joseph Mazzello?' One of the lead officers asks as he approaches Joe and Rami. 
Joe raises his hand. 'That's me.' He says in a shaky voice.
'You called us?'
Joe nods.
'I ordered my colleagues to encircle the building. As soon as I get the sign that it is safe outside the building, we go inside. I ask you both to wait outside for news. One of my officers will stay with you so you'll know it when there's news.' He calmly explains to the two. 
Rami nods to say he understands. 'Thank you officer.' He says before walking over to Joe. 'It's gonna be fine, okay? They're going to find him, and then he'll be safe again.' He says to his friend.
Joe stares straight ahead, trying to believe Rami with all his heart. But he has this bad feeling inside that tells him it won't all be as easy as Rami is telling him.  

Not much later, an officer approaches the three. 'Outside everything is clear, sir. We are ready to invade the building. The suspects are still inside. There is a van on the grounds behind the old cells.'
The lead officer nods. 'Thank you. Tell the others to have their guns ready. The two suspects are probably armed.' He says before walking away, leaving Joe and Rami behind with the other cop.
Joe sinks to the floor in defeat. Tears are in his eyes, but he doesn't want the officer to see him cry.
Time seems to stand still.
It also remains silent about the policeman's walkie-talkie.
Rami nervously walks back and forth while on the phone with Lucy. 

*Agent Mullins, call the emergency center for a fire truck and an ambulance. We found the victim, he is unresponsive at the moment. He's in a very critical condition, so tell them to hurry.*

It suddenly sounds through the officer's walkie-talkie.
Joe jumps up with a gasp. 
Rami quickly hangs up the phone, and walks towards Joe, knowing the boy is about to melt down. 
'This is it. I'm going to lose him Rami.' Joe says with a loud sob.
Rami is also in a panic, but tries to be there for Joe. He takes a step forward, opening his arms for his friend.
The ginger hugs him, sobbing into his chest.
'Can you please tell us what's going on?' Rami asks the officer in a trembling voice. 
The man hesitates for a moment. 'I am not allowed to give you details about the case, unfortunately. But I can explain in short what happened?'
Rami nods. He puts his arm around Joe as some kind of comfort. The two look at the officer intently.
'Mr. Hardy has been locked up in one of the old cells, and there he was severly abused. Then the cell collapsed, and Mr. Hardy got trapped under the rubble. The fire brigade is on their way to free him.' 
Joe gasps. He feels himself starting to stagger, and lets himself drop to the ground. The tears just keep coming.
Rami sits down next to him and tries to calm him down. He pulls Joe close to him. 'Shh, it's okay.' He mumbles, trying to stay calm himself. He blinks his tears away, and takes a few deep breaths.
That way they stay for a while. Close to each other, listening to each other's sniffles.
Less than three minutes later, the ambulance and the fire brigade arrive. Emergency workers rush in, followed by firefighters.
'I'm sorry Joe, but I'm gonna call Gwil. This is worse than we thought. He needs to know this.' Rami picks up his phone. He looks at his watch, and sees that it is almost midnight. So he'll have to call Gwil and hope he's not asleep yet.
Joe doesn't even seem to have heard what Rami just said. All he can think about is Ben. Ever since he met the boy he's been in love with him. And now, when he can finally call him his boyfriend, he gets taken away from him in the most awful way anyone could imagine.
'Hi Gwil. Sorry if I woke you up. Listen, I hate to ask, but what time will Lina have her ultrasound tomorrow?' Rami asks as soon as Gwil answers the phone. 'Nine in the morning? Okay. Yes that's right.' He bites his lip when Gwil asks the question he was dreading. What happened? Rami takes a deep breath. 'Well, don't startle, okay? Ben was locked up by Corey's henchmen. They beat him up and then the room he was locked up in collapsed. The fire brigade and ambulance just went in to rescue him.' While explaining the situation, he must do his best not to burst into tears.
'How is Joe doing? He must be devastated.' Gwil says.
Rami looks at Joe in concern. 'He is.' He says as he lets out a shaky sigh. 'Wait really? Would that be possible? That would be great. What time are you here then? Okay, then I'll see you then. Yes I'll keep you informed. Bye.' Rami hangs up the phone, and sits down next to Joe again.

'Gwil and Lina will be here as soon as possible. They will be here in two hours, thanks to the station's night lines. Lina will reschedule her ultrasound.' Rami says to Joe.
The latter just stares straight ahead and nods. Tears are still running down his cheeks.
When the paramedics come out with Ben on a stretcher, Joe jumps up with a loud sob and runs to him.
Rami quickly runs after his friend.
Unfortunately they are stopped by a few officers before they can reach Ben. They can, however, catch a glimpse of Ben.
The blond boy is wrapped up in a blanket, and is wearing an oxygen mask. His eyes are closed, and he looks awfully pale. His face is covered in blood and bruises.
'BEN! Let me go to him. Please! BEN!' Joe shouts, almost choking on his tears.
The officers have to make an effort to stop him. With all the adrenaline rushing through his blood, Joe is stronger than ever before.
'Sir, he is rushed to the hospital. We ask you to follow the ambulance and wait in the hospital for news.' One officer says.
Rami pulls Joe's arm, holding him close. 'Joe, there's nothing we can do now. I'll drive us to the hospital. Ben's gonna need you with him there. Call Brian in the meantime. Ben did the same the night you ended up in the hospital.' At the moment he doesn't know what to do, and he'll try everything to calm Joe down.
Joe nods and walks towards the car.
Rami takes a deep breath. He quickly sends Gwil a message before he walks to the car as well.

So little question, are there any special holidays in your country, that no other country has? Here in Holland we have a holiday called "Sinterklaas". It's something like christmas but a little different. It's on december 5th, and I'm excited😊😍
