Chapter 41

Joe defeatedly sits down on the edge of his bed in his hotel room. Ben wasn't in the park. Tears stream down his cheeks. What does he have to do without Ben? He walks to the kitchen in a sort of haze, and takes a bottle of vodka from the cupboard. He needs something to soften his misery. He pours himself a big glass of the liquor and sits down on the bed again.
When he wants to check his phone for the last time, it indicates that the battery is empty. 'Fuck.' He mumbles. He empties the glass of vodka in one go before tossing his phone aside. Looking at the vodka bottle standing on his nightstand, wondering whether he should pour himself another glass. The only thing that seems to allay his concerns is the alcohol. But he needs to stay sober for Ben.
The ginger lies down, fighting his tiredness. But after a few minutes he can't help it anymore, and he falls asleep with tears in his eyes.
This, however, doesn't last long, because after ten minutes Rami is at his door. 'Joe? Joe open up! I have news!'
Joe opens his eyes with a groan, and walks to the door. 
The door has only just opened when Rami bursts into the room. 'Joe I know where-' Rami stops his sentence when he sees the half-empty bottle of vodka on Joe's nightstand.
He looks at Joe, who is looking away in embarrassment.
'Being human is a condition that requires a little anesthesia.' The ginger mumbles. 
'Joe, don't use that against me.' Rami says as he crosses his arms.
It remains silent for a moment.
Joe sits down on his bed again. 'What was the news you wanted to tell me?' He asks after a while.
'I know where Ben is. He's turned on the emergency alarm.' Rami says.
Joe jumps up. He runs to the coat rack and takes his coat. 'We're going there now.'
Rami nods and takes his car keys from his pocket.
The two rush to the parking lot and get into the car. 

'Where does the signal come from?' Joe asks as he puts on his seat belt.
Rami checks his phone again to see if the location might have changed. 'It comes from the ruin of the old city jail.' He says surprised.
He has not yet uttered this sentence when Joe's face starts to look pale.
The ginger starts to breathe faster, and tears spring to his eyes. 'Fuck! Rami, Ben is taken by Corey.' He says in panic.
Rami looks at him in surprise and shock. Just when he wants to ask what Joe means, he is interrupted by his phone that rings. He takes his phone out of his pocket, and checks who it is. 'Shit, it's Gwil. Of course. He also received the emergency alarm.'
Joe is still panicking, but he manages to think straight for now. 'Tell him to come home as soon as possible after the ultrasound. But don't tell him what's going on just yet. I don't want him to miss his child's first ultrasound.' Joe says.
Rami nods and answers the phone. 'Hey Gwil. Uhm yes that's right.' He says.
Joe tries to pick up some of the words that are said, but he really can't make out anything.
'Gwil listen. Come to the hotel as soon as possible tomorrow after the ultrasound. I'll tell you what's going on once you're on your way, okay?' Rami says. 'I will. Bye.' He hangs up the phone, and starts the car. He hands over his phone to Joe so he can keep an eye on Ben's location.
The car drives away from the parking lot, and at full throttle they make their way to the old city jail.

'Now explain to me calmly, how you know Corey took Ben?' Rami asks. He looks at Joe, seeing the boy nervously bouncing his leg up and down.
Joe nods and takes a deep breath. 'The night Corey beat Ben up, he yelled at Ben first. He said Ben should be in jail. And if that didn't happen, Corey would take care of it himself. He's going to put Ben in one of the remaining cells, Rami. I feel it.'
Rami gasps when he hears this. He tries to control himself. If Joe sees that something is wrong, he will probably have a panic attack. Rami takes a deep breath and tries to find a way to calmly tell Joe this. 'Uhm Joe. We better hurry then. The cells of the old city prison have been about to collapse for years.'

'W- what are you going to do with me?' Ben asks anxiously, looking around and scanning the place. The men took him to a kind of corridor with all doors.
One of the two men approaches him and pushes him violently to the ground.
The other approaches him with a cloth. 'You will see that when you wake up again.' He says with a mean grin.
Ben has to recover from the hard push, but then sees the man coming towards him with the cloth in his hands. He shakes his head violently. 'N-no, please!' But before he knows it, the man has pressed the cloth to his face. Slowly Ben sees everything around him turn black.

'SHIT!' Joe shouts out of nowhere. 
Rami is startled and has to do his best to keep the car on the road. Out of the corner of his eye he sees Joe leaning forward, resting his head in his hands. 'Joe what is it?' Rami looks aside with a concerned look.
'No no no, how could I forget that? Rami, drive as fast as you can.' Joe says in a panic.
He gets a questioning look and a short nod from Rami. 'What have you forgotten?' He asks as he pushes in the accelerator a little further.
'Ben has claustrophobia. If Corey's henchmen lock him up in a cell, he'll go crazy.' Joe says. 'And Corey knows that Ben has cut himself once before. What if he gives Ben a knife and...-'
'Joe, let's just assume the best.' Rami interrupts him. 
Joe nods and lets out a shaky breath. 

*Beep beep beep*

Joe checks the phone, and immediately looks up in a panic. 'He is moving.'
