Chapter 39🎶

When Ben arrives at the fountain in the park, he sees a man standing with his back towards him. That must be his father. Ben looks around. This is where Corey beat him up. He feels the shivers running down his spine. 'Joe? I see him. I'm going to him now.' He says.
'Good luck Benny. And don't worry, you'll be fine.' He hears Joe say on the phone.
Ben takes a deep breath and walks towards his father.
His father slightly jumps when Ben taps him on the shoulder. 'Benjamin! You're here.' He says pleasantly surprised.
Ben shrugs. 'Just so you'll leave me alone after all this.'
Mr. Jones nods. He wants to say something, but is interrupted by Ben.
'Listen sir, you're not going to like this.' The blond boy says.
Mr Jones gives his son a questioning look. 'I don't understand what you mean? And please stop calling me sir. Just dad or father is enough.'
Ben looks at his father in surprise. 'But you used to get furious when I didn't call you sir.' He says.
His father shrugs. 'Times change.' He mumbles before walking towards a bench. The same bench he sat with Joe before Corey came along to harass them.
Ben looks at his father with a raised eyebrow before following him, sitting down next to him on the bench. 'What I mean, father, is that you are not going to approve of who I am now. And I don't want that. I want to be able to be who I am.' He says.
His father looks at him uncomprehendingly, his gaze asking for an explanation.
'I dropped out of college, and I started acting instead. And I am not married to a girl. So you can let go of all the perfect images you had of me.' Ben says, looking down at his lap.
His father sighs. 'Before I respond to that, let me tell my story. Please?'
Ben hesitates for a moment, but then nods.
'The day before you left because of Allen, Allen's brother came to our door. You weren't home, and your mother let him in.
I believe his name was uhm.... Corey or something. He convinced your mother that you had committed a murder and that she should send you away. After the boy left, we got into a huge fight. Your mother actually wanted to send you away. But I disagreed. Your mother then convinced me that you would only be away for a few days, just so you could learn your lesson.' Mr Jones briefly looks away, ashamed he agreed to all that back then. 'But after a few days, you still weren't back. When I asked her where she had sent my son, she said I no longer had a son. I was so mad at her. That night I packed my things and left a note for your mother. I wrote that I went to find you. After several days on my search, I received a letter from her. That letter contained the divorce papers. She had already signed hers. She wrote that she could no longer be married to a man who chooses the child and not her. Since that day I've been looking for you. I was convinced that I would never see you again. But a few years later I suddenly saw your name at the bottom of a film poster. That's how I found you.'
Ben sees that his father has tears in his eyes. They sparkle in his eyes from the light of the fountain. 'So- so you didn't hate me?' The blond stammers.
Mr. Jones shakes his head. A tear runs down his cheek. 'Of course I didn't.' He says softly. 'I'm sorry I'm such a bad father, Benjamin.'
Ben stares ahead, confused about the whole story. Should he believe his father? After everything that happened? And what if he doesn't approve of him and Joe being in a relationship? 'But- but you don't mind that I dropped out of college and became an actor? And that I'm not with a girl?' Ben asks hesitantly.
His father shakes his head. 'As long as you are happy. Are you happy?'
Ben looks shyly away and nods. 'I am.' He says, softly. He smiles widely when he thinks about how great his life is right now. He has this great job playing Roger Taylor in the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, he has the greatest friends someone can wish for, and he can finally call Joe his boyfriend.
'Is there a lucky one?' Mr. Jones asks with a small grin when he sees the dreamy look in the boy's eyes.
Ben nods with red cheeks.
'I'd like to meet him sometime.' Mr Jones says with a wink.
Ben looks at his father with wide eyes. 'How do you know that I'm g-... that I have a boyfriend?'
Mr. Jones shrugs with a smile. 'I've always known. You should know I wasn't the one trying to find you a girlfriend. That was your mother. I don't care who you're with, as long as you two truly care about each other.' He says. 'I understand that it is quite a lot to process and forgive me. But all I want now is to see you. I've missed so many years of your life. I don't want it to get any more.'
Mr. Jones says before he gets up. 'I think that's enough for this evening.'
Ben also gets up and gives him a hug. 'Thank you father.' He whispers.
Mr. Jones gives him a smile. He looks in his pocket for his wallet, and takes out some coins. He gives them to Ben. 'Here, buy a rose for your boyfriend. I'm glad you found each other.'
Ben takes the coins with a big smile.
His father looks at him proudly. 'I should go. You have my number. Call me if you need me. I'll be there for you from now on.'
Ben is speechless and nods. He hadn't expected this.

'Wow, that went great.'
Ben jumps when he suddenly hears Joe's voice. He had forgotten that Joe was able to hear everything that was just said. 'It certainly went great.' The blond says with a big smile.
'Are you coming home now? I miss you.' Joe says. He'd been sitting on the couch in his comfy clothes all this time, waiting for the conversation to finish.
'Not yet Blanket. I have yet to buy a rose for my boyfriend.' Ben says with a small grin.
Joe feels his heart warm every time Ben calls him his boyfriend. He still can't believe it. 'Okay then. I'll try to survive here without you.' What he doesn't know yet, is that Ben will be away longer than he thinks.
