Chapter 44

'B-Brian?' Joe says as soon as the guitarist answers his phone. He looks through his window, seeing a sign that indicates they're almost at the hospital. 
'Hey Joe, what's going on? Is everything alright?' Brian asks concerned.
Joe wipes away a tear and takes a deep breath. 'No. Not at all.' He says with a sob. 'I-It's Corey. He hurt Ben. We are now on our way to the hospital. His condition is critical.' He explains. He hears some rumbling on the other end of the line.
'Oh my. I'm getting there now Joe. Do not worry. Keep breathing. I'll be there in ten minutes.' Brian says, gathering all his stuff to leave.
Joe can hear that Brian is in a slight panic. But the fact that Brian is coming makes him a bit calmer already. 'T-thank you Bri.' The ginger mumbles. 'We'll see you soon.' And with those words he ends the call. Joe let's out a shaky breath. He looks at Rami, who has his eyes fixed on the road. Joe wonders if that's so he won't burst into tears, or if it's just because it's dark.
A few minutes later, the two arrive at the hospital.

When Joe gets out of the car, he has to do his best to stay upright. The tension has made his legs completely soft.
Rami is just in time and supports him.
Joe shoots him a weak and not so believable smile.
They walk into the hospital together. There they are immediately taken by one of the doctors to an office.
Rami and Joe both sit down in a chair, anxiously awaiting the doctor's explanation.
'Good Mr Malek and Mr Mazzello. I can imagine you are both very shocked.' The doctor begins.
The two nod.
'I'll tell you as best I can how Mr Hardy is doing and what will happen to him now.' The doctor takes out Ben's file and puts on his glasses.
Joe feels himself starting to shake again, scared for what is coming. Suddenly he feels a hand on his knee. He looks aside, and meets Rami's eyes. They give him a reassuring look.
Rami gives Joe a small nod, to say it will all be fine.
'When we found Mr. Hardy in one of the cells, he was under a large wooden beam. His leg was trapped underneath, and the fire brigade had a hard time getting him free. As soon as he was released, we immediately gave him oxygen. His heart rate was dangerously low, and we shouldn't have been later or we don't know if he would've made it to the hospital.' The doctor explains.
Joe puts a hand over his mouth as he lets out a soft gasp. His whole body is shaking. He almost lost Ben.

The doctor wants to continue with his explanation, but is interrupted by a nurse who enters. 'Dr. Smith? I have here the first results of Benjamin Hardy's research.' She gives an envelop to the doctor.
He takes the envelope and thanks her before she leaves the office. He opens the envelope and reads the results. 'We have the blood test results. It turns out that there are traces of a strong sleeping aid in his blood.' He says with a raised eyebrow. 'Do you know if Mr. Hardy is taking sleeping pills?' He asks Joe and Rami.
Rami looks at Joe questioningly.
The ginger shakes his head. 'No I don't think so.' He mumbles.
'I want to ask you to wait in the waiting room for more news. As soon as we know anything about his situation, we will let you know.' The doctor says. He gets up and shakes hands with the two.

When they step out of the office, Rami and Joe see Brian entering the hospital.
As soon as the older man sees the two, he rushes over to them.
'Thank god Brian you're here.' Rami says. He and Brian look concerned at Joe.
Who in the meantime has sat down in one of the chairs in the waiting room.
'How's Joe holding up?' Brian asks Rami softly.
The black-haired boy shakes his head to say that things are not going well.
Brian sits down next to Joe and takes his hand. The boy's hand is ice cold and shivers completely.
The three say nothing and anxiously await news. Half an hour passes without them hearing anything.

After an hour, Gwilym and Lina rush into the hospital. They give the three a hug, but are interrupted by Dr. Smith approaching them.
'I can inform you that I have received almost all information and test results from Mr Hardy. I'll just start at the beginning.' He picks up a number of forms.
Brian feels Joe squeeze his hand gently.
Dr. Smith clears his throat and puts on his glasses. 'Right now we are keeping Mr. Hardy in an artificial coma. His lungs aren't strong enough to breathe on their own yet, so we put him on an oxygen machine, just to be safe. We are almost certain that the overdose of sleeping aid did not cause brain damage. However, he may suffer from temporary amnesia when he wakes up. He is now fed through a tube so that his vital functions have enough energy to recover.' Dr. Smith explains.
At that moment a nurse comes out of the room where Ben is lying. She gives the doctor a short nod. 'Right. The nurses have just treated Mr. Hardy's wounds. We think he was hit with various objects. His left arm and right ankle are broken by the heavy wooden beam under which he was stuck. He also bruised three ribs. We hope Mr. Hardy was already unconscious before the cell collapsed, because that would make him less prone to trauma after all this.'
Brian gets up, overwhelmed by this story. 'T-thank you Dr. Smith. Can we go to him already?'
Dr. Smith looks at his watch, then at Ben's file in front of him. He hesitates for a moment, but then nods. He escorts the five to Ben's room.
As soon as Joe sees Ben he gasps. A tear rolls down his cheek. He sits down next to the bed and takes Ben's hand.
'Do talk to him. He may be asleep, but we think patients in this situation may be able to hear things.' The doctor says before leaving the room.
Gwil quickly shakes his hand before the door of the room closes.
