Chapter 50

*Beep beep beep* 

Sleepily, Joe turns off his alarm. He looks around the room in confusion. But then a rush of happiness takes over his body. Today is the day. Just another two hours and then Ben will be awake again.
His thoughts are interrupted by a knock on the door.
'Morning Joe. Ready for today?' Rami's voice fills the room.
But Joe's vision is too blurry to see his friends properly. He rubs his eyes and blinks a few times. 'Uhm yes. More than ready.' He says in the happiest and most believable tone he can do.
Yet Gwilym realizes that there is something wrong. 'Are you okay?' He asks.
Joe gets up and walks to Ben's bed, sitting down on the edge. 'Er... yeah. I'm just a little dizzy, but it will go away once I've had breakfast.' He mumbles.
Rami gets up. 'Well, I'll get you something from the cafeteria then.' With those words he leaves the room.
After that, Gwil briefly explains to Joe what the nurse told him and Rami last night. 'So he will wake up around noon.' He says.
Joe feels a rush of excitement running through his body. He leans in, pressing a sweet kiss on Ben's forehead.
Gwil smiles when he sees the sparkles in Joe's eyes when he looks at Ben. Reassured about his friend, he sits in a chair, waiting for Rami to return with breakfast. When it's almost time for Ben's final check up, Gwil gets a message.

(08:57 Am) Brian: Hey Gwil. How is it going there? Ready for today? Please let us know how Ben is doing when he's awake. Say hello to Ben from Roger and me. And also to the other boys of course. We will come by as soon as possible to visit Ben. Take care!

Joe smiles when Gwil reads the message out loud. He looks nervously at his watch. 'The nurse can be here any time now. Just a little longer, Benny.' He says with a big smile.
Gwil nods. 'All we can do now is wait.' He adds.

It is now almost noon.
Gwil, Joe and Rami are all seated around Ben's bed, chatting a bit to kill some time.
Every few minutes, the nurse and Dr. Smith come into the room to check on Ben.
All this time Joe has been holding Ben's hand, rubbing his thumb over Ben's knuckles. When it is a quarter past twelve, the ginger starts to get worried. 'Shouldn't he already be awake?' He asks when the doctor enters the room.
The doctor gives him a reassuring smile. 'Don't worry. With some patients the medicines kick in faster than with others. His heart rate is increasing, indicating that he could wake up at any moment.'
Joe breathes a sigh of relief. He intertwines his fingers with Ben's, pressing a small kiss on the back of the blond's hand.
'I'm going to leave you alone now, as there are other patients in this ward who need a check up. If there is anything, you can press the red button. Then the nurse and I will be here as soon as possible.' Dr. Smith says before he and the nurse leave the room.

'He squeezed my hand!' Joe suddenly says.
Rami looks at his blond friend with a big smile.
Gwil also feels the joy rushing through his body. In a little while their friend will be awake. 'But that is amazing!' He says with a big smile.
'Come on baby, open your eyes.' Joe whispers to Ben.
Rami gets up. 'I'll get him a glass of water. I can imagine he is thirsty after such a long time.'
Joe nods. 'Thanks Rami.' He says.
Gwil just wants to say something when he gets a call. He looks who it is, and mouths a "I'll be right back" to Joe. He quietly leaves the room.
When Rami returns with the glass of water, he looks in surprise at the empty chair where Gwil was just sitting. 'Where's Gwil?' He asks Joe.
The ginger shrugs. 'He got a call from someone.' 
Rami rolls his eyes and sits down next to Ben's bed again. 'How are you two going to do things when Ben can go home?' He asks.
Joe looks down. 'I don't know.' He mumbles with a small smile. 'If it were up to me, I'd be moving in with him tomorrow. So I can take care of him. He is the love of my life, you know. But I don't really care. If only I can be with him, and if only he is happy. He deserves that.' While saying this, he keeps looking at Ben.
Then his eyes widen. 'Rami, look.' He nods to his hand, which has been holding Ben's hand all this time.
Rami doesn't understand what Joe means at first. But then his eyes also widen, and a big smile appears on his face.
Ben slowly moves his hand, and intertwines his fingers with Joe's.
'Ben? Benny, can you hear me?' Joe whispers. 

At that moment, Gwil walks back into the room.
When Rami looks up, he notices that Gwil looks quite pale. 'Who were you talking to?' He asks curiously.
Gwil doesn't seem to want to tell, because he doesn't answer Rami's question. Instead, he packs his things. 'Guys, I'm sorry, but I have to go somewhere. I don't know how long it will take but I'll be back as soon as possible.' He says.
Joe is quite taken aback by Gwil's sudden departure, so he just nods.
Rami, on the other, gets up with a frown on his face. 'So you're just leaving now, while Ben could wake up any minute?' He asks.
Gwil can hear the frustration in his voice. Of course he would prefer to just tell his friends why he suddenly has to leave. But he doesn't want to ruin this day for Joe. He nods and leaves the room. 'Sorry guys.' He says softly before closing the door.
Rami turns to Joe. 'Who does he think he is!' He says angrily.
Joe shrugs. 'He wouldn't leave if it's not important. That's not like Gwil.' He says, hoping to calm Rami down. 
Rami says nothing and keeps staring straight ahead. Then he looks at Ben.
Two green eyes look glassy at him...
