Friends were always a weird thing for Kailani.
She enjoyed having them, but sometimes found herself with friends that she wouldn't expect herself to be with due to common interests deep within. For example, Rachel Berry. She was annoyed by the girl's aggressive attitude every other minute, but she had learned over the last few days that under all that mouth and self-conceited behavior, she actually wasn't a horrible friend.
And then there was Alisha Williams, who had joined the glee club and was genuinely surprised it was actually a glee club, but nonetheless, blew everyone away with her dance skills and she could sing, so it wasn't a surprise that Mr. Schuester practically dragged her in chains to join the group, giving them more than enough members to compete fort Sectionals.
She was nice, a little more energetic then Kailani was used to, but the girl was a good friend. She didn't let Madison near her in the locker rooms when junior varsity and varsity practices overlapped either, so that was amazing, but she was sure it would only last so long before the blonde caught up with her again. The girl reminded her a lot of Mercedes, so it was no surprise when the two Beyonce loving girls migrated to one another and practically joined forces during their first few glee club rehearsals.
Everything seemed to be going well. Besides being super lazy and complacent after finding out the teams they were going against at Sectionals, the New Directions were ready for another weekly lesson taught by their direction.
"Competition."
Who was currently confusing the entire class with pictures he posted on a board. A bear and a shark weren't even in the same food chain. When would they have the time or chance to get into a fig-....A swimming pool and lightning? Really? Where did this man get his teaching degree?
"Every one of these people or elements was a champion in their own right. But they used competing with each other to make themselves even better." Mr. Schuester explained, as Kailani's neurodivergent brain itched with irritation.
"A Great White would not have been able to fight a Grizzly Bear. You'd be better off posting a picture of a Greenland Shark and a Polar Bear since they are actually in the same ecosystem, but regardless, the shark would win fins down." Kailani spoke up, blushing when everyone's eyes turned to her in surprise. She looked down at her purple sneakers and shoved her hands in her pockets. "Sorry."
"I have to agree with Lani." Kurt spoke up, chuckling a bit at his twin's dorky need to correct the man. "I don't understand how lightning is in competition with an above-ground swimming pool."
"Yeah, that's not exactly..."
"Twins, just go with it." Mr. Schue insisted, before turning to the group. "You guys have become complacent. You were great at invitationals, but you got to up your game if you want to get through Sectionals. Okay, split up. Boys on the left side, girls on the right side. Let's go, come on."
