A gentle knock on the bedroom door echoed through the dark room, followed by the soft creaking of the wooden door, casting light into her boyfriend's youngest child's room as Carole slipped in with a plate of food in hand.

"Firefly?" She called to the lump under the blankets, setting the plate down on her desk and sighing when she picked up the one she brought in for lunch. "Kailani, you need to eat something before your father gets home."

"I don't feel good." Kailani mumbled, pulling the blanket over her body and shaking her head when she felt the mattress dip and a hand rest on her back.

"What's going on, sweetheart? The flu's going around at school. Are you feeling warm?" Carole asked, pulling the blanket down from over Kailani's head. She frowned at the dark circles present around the teen's eyes, laying the back of her hand against Kailani's forehead. "You're a little warm, sweetheart. Are you sleeping okay?"

"Yes. I'm fine. Just don't feel good." Kailani mumbled, turning further over and pulling the blanket up over her face again. "Headache. Please leave."

After a moment, Carole sighed, hearing another soft please come from under the blankets. She rubbed her back, standing up from the bed and moving the food to the side table.

"Eat something, honey. It might help you feel better." She spoke softly, squeezing her calf, before walking towards the door. "If you need anything, I'll be here till seven. I'm working the night shift."

Kailani waited until the bedroom door clicked shut and footsteps echoed down the hallway, before pulling the blanket down and checking her phone. She sighed, looking at one of the many messages she had from Quinn that day, typing a quick reply before resting the phone down on the side table.

She rolled out of bed and shuffled towards her desk, yanking open the bottom drawer and pulling out her sleeping medication

She rolled out of bed and shuffled towards her desk, yanking open the bottom drawer and pulling out her sleeping medication. She looked down at the bottle for a moment, sighing as she looked towards the clock to confirm it was no where near time to take her medication.
