"Do you still love JJ?"

Brooke looked up and met A-2's eyes as the seventeen-year-old sat down in front of her on the ground. They were beside the two sleeping thirteen-year-olds under observation, waiting patiently for their monitors to give them any information possible. Besides a few heart spikes from both girls, most of their data came from Zeus's sister's transcriptions from a corresponding lab across the resistance's hideaway.

"That's an invasive question." Brooke raised her brow when A-2 smiled. "What?"

"You're avoiding it." A-2 pointed out. "I've seen the way you look at her. Not to be creepy since she's eleven years younger than you, but you care about her. More than a friend would."

"We're not friends. We haven't been for a while." Brooke returned her eyes to the yellowing cards. "And my love for her does not cloud my judgement."

"At home..." A-2 looked down at the Ace of Spades and smiled to herself, glancing at S a few feet away. "JJ was all worried about missing your first date before this chaos started. Before V..." Her eyes filled with tears as Brooke looked up and smiled sadly. "She loves you. I can see it. When they mention you on the streets and Momma's watching JJ...Her face just...gives it away. I hope you don't think she's given up on you willingly. Please don't give up on my sister."

"Do you wanna know a secret, A-2?" B picked up the jack of hearts and flipped it over, sliding it to sit in front of A-2. She waited for the girl to pick up the card and looked down at the Sharpie on the back. "Your sister once told me the Jack of Hearts was a young man who was in love with a woman that always remained unattainable. No matter what he does, he cannot be with her, but he loves her. He waits for her in armor as a loyal knight with his sword of courage at his side...It's a symbol of undying passion and hope even when they're not in their right mind."

"Wow." A-2 smiled at the message on the back of the card. "Do you believe it?"

"Your sister carries a sword, doesn't she?" B glanced up at A-2's hopeful eyes. "I may hate what she's done, but I will never hate her."

"Good to know." A-2 grinned.

Their moment was interrupted by a loud monitor blaring through the room. On one of the screens, the picture of Vaughn that T had taken when she arrived, along with bloodwork and other helpful resources to cross-compare against their current versions, blew up on the screen with her vitals.

"What's wrong?" Q jogged over to stand behind T, resting her hands on her grandson's shoulders as E looked back at her. "T?"

"V's heart rate is rising. Quickly." T typed across the computer while S rushed to Vaughn's side and began checking her silver eyes with a flashlight. "We may need to pull her out."
