September 1st, 2002.

It was the first day of school in the Collins-Hummel-Hudson household in the Collins-Hummel's new community. Kurt was ecstatic to make new friends and venture into their new lives without any worry in the world, but his twin didn't share his enthusiasm.

Kailani stared intently at the imposing doors of the local elementary school and shuffled closer to their mother. As nerves gripped them, their small hand sought comfort in tightly grasping their mother, Elizabeth's, firm grip. With their bluish eyes scanning the surroundings, Kailani meticulously analyzed every possible escape route, the lines of worry etched on their young face.

The doors loomed large before them, seemingly intimidating in their stature. Kailani's heart raced with a mixture of excitement and trepidation, uncertain of what lay beyond those entrance doors. The vibrant sounds of laughter and chatter from within only added to their anticipation, mingling with the rustling autumn leaves and creating a sense of both comfort and unknown.

Kailani's mind buzzed with questions and curiosities as they observed the other children playing on the playground, seemingly carefree and uninhibited. Would they, too, find solace in the company of new friends? Could they overcome any challenges that awaited them within those brick walls? These thoughts swirl around in their young mind, shaping their apprehension into a determined resolve to step into this new chapter of their life.

In that moment of hesitation, Kailani's connection with their mother grew stronger. Elizabeth offered a reassuring smile, her presence a source of comfort in the face of uncertainty. With renewed confidence, Kailani took a deep breath and tightened their grip on Elizabeth's hand, readying themselves to embark on this educational journey.

However, as soon as that confidence filtered through their constantly overworking brain and overactive imagination, fear stuck Kailani deep in the chest.

"I want to go back to my friend," Kailani whispered, looking up at Elizabeth. "Mommy, please."

Elizabeth glanced at Burt as the man fixed Kurt's backpack over his shoulders. She smiled when the man lowered down to his knees and took a hand each from their twins.

"Now you listen to me." Burt looked between the two close to identical faces watching him. "You are two of the best kids in this entire world. You have to be brave and show people that. Can you do that?"

"I want to invite them to our tea parties." Kurt smiled as Elizabeth chuckled and squeezed Burt's shoulder.

"I think your new friends would love that." She agreed.

"I have a friend." Kailani looked over their shoulder at the school and pouted. "Will Lucy come?"

"I'm sorry, Kai." Elizabeth shook her head. "Lucy is going to her school near her house. This school is near our new house."

"Oh." Kailani looked back to their parents. "Can I go back to our old house?"

"No, Bud." Burt chuckled. "But you can make some new friends here. Look at some of the kids coming in today! Don't they look nice?"
