The diner was ringing softly with music from the jukebox near the bar. It seemed like a quiet night for the crew as most local students were too invested in the pre-season baseball games across town.
"Hey." Alisha smiled softly when Elizabeth looked up from filling salt shakers. "Whatcha doin'?"
"Salt." Elizabeth chuckled, glancing behind Alisha as she sat at the bar. She sighed when she noticed Mackenzie and Quinn, their heads buried in books, talking to one another as they desperately tried to unravel a plan. "Any luck?"
"I don't understand a drop of what's happening," Alisha admitted, leaning her head on her hand and looking down at the menu before her. "I miss when we were in high school, and things seemed easy."
"Things are never easy." Elizabeth looked down and brushed her damp rag over another menu. "So, what's life like where you're from? You have a kid, right? That's nice."
"Two." Alisha grinned, bobbing her head back and forth as she thought about them. "A boy and a girl."
"Precious." Elizabeth inhaled deeply and shrugged. "I've always wanted a kid. Well, not always. Kids are working. Kids need a role model. I guess it didn't matter in the end."
"If we can stop Kai and Kailani's deaths, we should be able to stop yours." Alisha pouted. "You're amazing. I've heard a lot about you from Kai and Kurt, but I never thought you'd be this cool."
Elizabeth looked up at Alisha curiously, slowly raising a brow when she waved a hand at Blaine and continued speaking. Her eyes scanned the man, then back to the black woman in front of her with more focused attention.
"You mean so much to them," Alisha said, rolling her nails over her cheek. "I think you're their world next to their Dad."
"How is their Dad?" Elizabeth asked. "After I died. Was he okay?"
"It took him till they were teenagers to move on. He even talked about you in his vows at the wedding." Alisha shrugged when Elizabeth's eyes widened in surprise. "I remember Kai telling me your toothbrush was still in the bathroom even after their Step-Mom moved in. They'd lay on your floor and smell your perfume. Kurt kept your pillowcase to sleep with."
"That's so depressing." Elizabeth's face screwed at the thought. "I married a guy like that? What was I thinking making him that dependent on me?"
"I think it's cute." Alisha laughed. "My wife said she threw all the ugly shit I bought out a week after I was in the hospital. I wasn't even dead."
