Burt Hummel's smiling face and waving hand were the last things Kailani Collins-Hummel saw as they turned into the school grounds for their exciting first day of fifth grade.

With their fingers laced tightly with Kurt's, they embarked on their journey down the hallway towards the fifth-grade wing. The familiar surroundings, which they had explored over the weekend during the open house event, filled them with a sense of confidence and anticipation.

As they walked, they couldn't help but notice the colorful displays adorning the hallways, showcasing the imaginative creations of their fellow classmates from last year. Artwork, inspirational posters, and bubbly names welcomed them, adding splashes of vibrancy to the otherwise plain cement walls. The air was filled with a buzz of excitement and whispers of conversations from other students, all equally eager to begin their adventures in the fifth grade.

Kailani and Kurt took each step deliberately, allowing the collective sensations of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation to wash over them. They couldn't help but exchange glances, silently encouraging and supporting each other. Kailani was grateful for Kurt's smile, accepting the weight of their older brother's hand as it provided a comforting reassurance, like a guiding compass in this new year of academic voyage.

The twins were grateful for the opportunity to have practiced together during the open house the prior weekend. They recalled the feeling of sitting in their soon-to-be classroom, feeling the cozy embrace of the small chairs and admiring the bulletin boards proudly showcasing the teacher's welcome messages and neatly organized resources. The engaging materials and thoughtfully arranged learning spaces offered a glimpse into the wondrous educational journey that awaited them in their final year of elementary school.

As they finally reached the fifth-grade wing, their hearts beat with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. They exchanged a brief but determined glance, silently reaffirming their shared determination to make the most of this year.

"Where did you get that?" Kurt asked, reaching out to adjust the bowtie on Kailani's collar. They impressively matched outfits with their father's help, despite Elizabeth being stuck out of town for their first day of classes. "It's a nice shade. Compliments our eyes."

"Lucy got it for me!" Kailani smiled down at the bowtie, craning their neck enough to glimpse at the coloring. "An early birthday present. She said the same thing...about my eyes."

"Ohhh." Kurt nodded. " Why the early gift? Is she not coming to our birthday party?"

"No." A soft sigh escaped Kailani's lips. "Mommy said Lucy's Dad is fighting for more time with her. It's not going as good as Mom and Dad's agreement I guess. Lucy says her Dad's sometimes really mean."

"Oh, yeah." Kurt pretended to understand, nodding his head. "Well, at least Mom and Dad are neighbors, so we can hide from Finn's friends. And they do love each other, 'member?"

"Ugh! His friends!" Kailani groaned. "Noah is so weird."

"Yeah." Kurt rolled his eyes. "That's the friend I hide from too."

The twins giggled, swinging their hands together as they approached their classroom. Thankfully, they were assigned the same classroom to make it easier on their parents. Kurt had been bummed Kailani had to be separated from him during open house, realizing their assign seats were seas apart, but he was happy to share a table with a few faces he remembered from fourth grade.
