"This is a surprise."
Quinn looked up as Kailani walked into the kitchen with a few books in their arms. She smiled and motioned to the French press on the counter when her partner glanced toward it.
"Coffee?" She picked up the empty mug.
"Aren't you supposed to be at work?" Kailani asked. They placed their books on the counter and hummed suspiciously when Quinn didn't answer. "Are you running late?"
"No, I thought I'd take the day." Quinn admitted as she leaned against the counter. "Spend breakfast with you before you leave. Drive you to work. Walk the kids home from school."
"I take the train every morning." Kailani reminded their wife as they chewed on their lip. "But I think the kids would love some time with you."
"You know how I feel about the train. I don't want you taking it."
"Is this about last night?" Kailani looked up from their journals and files they needed that day to find Quinn's eyes trained on her feet. "You shouldn't worry about me. I'm fine."
"You're not fine." Quinn's voice was tense. She quickly took a deep breath to calm herself before looking up and facing the tired look in her partner's eyes. "Kailey, I want to take you to a doctor again. I...I want us to move. I can't protect you from everything going on here."
"What?" Kailani laughed lightly. "We built this home for the girls? For us?"
"I'll have something else built. Anything you want." Quinn waved around their kitchen. "We can afford it. I'll pull money round. We can put money in the girls accounts like you wanted. You can put your office and-and lab thing in the house. You won't have to go far for a doctor or take the train or—"
"Wait, I-I'm not sure about this. We can't just—"
"Kailani, baby, please! We can go west and get you away from everything!"
"West?" Kailani's brows shot to their hairline. "My family is here. Our family. Our friends. We should talk about this tonight. I-I have work. You have work. The kids—"
"Will be with Santana and Brittany tonight. I already asked them. We can look at houses or land plots tonight. I'll fly us out for the weekend and we can look."
"I'm not going to drop my project to go out west. I've told you this before. I'm so close to a breakthrough!" Kailani protested. They walked around the island and flipped the calendar on the fridge to scan their upcoming events. Their voice lowered to a mumble. "Not that you listen anymore."
