Cursing at herself for not checking the time more frequently when she was working on this week's essay prompt for English, Kailani jogged down the steps of the courtyard towards where her boyfriend sat impatiently bouncing his leg as he waited for her a few minutes past when they agreed to meet for lunch. She breathed an apologetic smile, leaning down and pecking his lips lightly, before falling into the seat across from him.
"I'm sorry, I'm late." She apologized, as Hunter pushed his food around with his plastic fork, rolling his eyes. "It won't happen again."
"Better not. I've been sitting here looking like an idiot, Kailani. Where have you been? I even went all the way down town to that stupid sushi place to get you chinese." He said, throwing down a plastic silverware pack in front of the girl with an annoyed roll of his eyes.
"I...I was working on a project in the library. I'm sorry. I'm only a few minutes late, Hunt. It's not a big deal." Kailani forced a nervous laugh, feeling the familiar guilt bubbling in her stomach. "I'm...I'm truly sorry."
"It is a big deal." Hunter sternly insisted, leaning over the table slightly. "We said we would meet at a specific time. You're late. I can't wait on you forever. I'm always waiting for you to get out of glee or finish with your friends to text me back. I'm your boyfriend."
"I...I know. I was just trying to finish Mrs. Rivera's assignment for the week...so if you need an idea for yours I already finished mine...Or-Or I can help you with yours, if you need it." Kailani said, looking down and poking about her food, glancing up nervously at her boyfriend.
Things had been...weird. Kailani wasn't quite sure how to describe things between Hunter and herself. She had eventually allowed him to kiss her and it really wasn't very special or romantic, but since then she began to realize how little she really knew about being someone's partner. She seemed to always be messing things up and upsetting the boy. She was late or couldn't explain things for their homework in a way he understood. There was a time last week she accidently embarrassed him in front of his friends by bringing up glee club, which she quickly apologized for, but Hunter seemed to be ticked off about every little thing she did at this point.
Was she really that horrible of a partner? Hunter was right. How could she have the audacity of being late and working on an assignment that's due at the end of the week when they had plans? It was beyond rude and she should have communicated better on her part. Hunter waited to eat with her after skipping and driving all the way down town to pick them up food. He had every right to be upset with her.
"I apologize." Kailani leaned over and took the boy's hand with a soft smile. "I'm really sorry, Hunt. I should have texted you and made sure I was on time."
