The summer of 2010 had been one to remember. For once, Kailani didn't spend the entire summer hiding from pee balloons and crying her eyes out hating her life. She had spent it bonding with her friends from the glee club, taking a spontaneous trip to the middle of nowhere with Quinn freaking Fabray, and getting her mental health to a point that even Burt Hummel was looking forward to the upcoming year now that his daughter had a solid family, friends, and professional support system.
But the grass wasn't always greener on the other side; an important fact she was going to have to remember as she exited Alisha's car the morning of their first day back in class. It would be just Kailani's luck her vision would spot the oh so familiar Chevrolet Silverado parked across the parking lot that haunted her with memories.
Way to start Junior year, Kai.
"Don't hurt yourself." Alisha whispered, looping their arms and purposely putting her body in between the teen's line of vision towards the truck as they walked towards the school's large glass double doors. "This is our year. I'm fabulously available and ready to mingle. You have a hot ass girlfriend. Best friends for freaking life. You're the top of your class and I'm the bottom of mine."
"And you're gonna make the varsity team this week!" Kailani winked, as Alisha grinned in excitement, having spent most of her time in the pool with land guidance from her older friend for the upcoming season.
"And you'll make the football team!" Alisha added a small bounce to her step, bumping her hip with Kailani's as their skirts swayed in unison. "I do have to say, I am pleasantly going to miss dragging your ass out of the pool. I miss making joked about you drowning...Anywaysss."
"You can drag me off the field instead. Only thing I'll be drowning in is sweaty and the smell of the other boy's jockstraps." Kailani giggled, as Alisha gagged, the thought of Hunter's return far back in her mind as they walked through the front double doors of McKinley High School, but of course, not without a quick gaze towards the dumpster where neither Kailani or Kurt were starting off the year.
That would mark the first year in two years the twins hadn't been greeted with a morning dive in trash bags for their first days of school and god did it feel amazing.
Progress is good. Baby steps. I'm okay.
To think for the past two years she had absolutely hated walking through these greasy gym sock smelling halls, avoiding the gazes of everyone she passed, pretending to be someone she wasn't.
Okay, so maybe some of that was still true, but there was progress and baby steps were better than no steps.
As she spent the entire summer repeating at every session she had with Jordan and every group meeting with fellow depressed suicidal teenagers...
