As the snow gingerly fell from the sky towards the white painted grounds of Lima, Ohio, Judy Fabray found herself standing over the upstairs landing looking out the broad windows of the Fabray household into the large backyard.
"She really likes that girl, huh?" Her oldest daughter, Frannie Fabray, asked as she moved to stand beside her mother with a cup of streaming coffee cradled in her hands, candy cane sticking out of the top.
Judy sent her daughter a gentle smile, chuckling and turning back to focus her eyes on Quinn in the backyard trying to show Kailani the correct way to make a snowman. She was quite amused that her daughter had insisted on such an activity, especially considering Kailani didn't look too allied with the snow and was bundled up like an eskimo.
"Kailani is a nice girl, Fran." Judy spoke up, hearing her daughter's light hum of acknowledgment into her Christmas mug. "Quinnie is happy."
"I know. I'm not complaining. I'm just..." Frannie sighed, biting her lip and watching the teens through the frosted windows, snowflakes sticking to the glass. "Dad saw Quinn posted about her on Facebook and he's having a stroke. Calling me nonstop since he knows I'm here. Demanding to know what poison you're feeding her."
"Poison? Please." Judy scoffed, shaking her head and gripping the metal railing in front of her. "Besides, this family is none of his business."
"Mom, he's going to tell the entire family about Quinn!" Frannie pointed out, turning to face her mother with a concerned look. "He wants to fight for custody. She's a minor. You have to think about these things. You're not legally divorced. What if he takes action? What if he tries to take Quinn? She can't go with me!"
"Sweetie, I do not care what your father thinks, or what the family projects us as. Your sister has been through a lot and she's never been this happy before. If it means going to court, then I'll go to court and expose his sorry butt for all his lies and under the table work." Judy turned and looked at her eldest daughter with a look of grief. "Lucy has been miserable for most of her life because of our family and I know you have felt the same. I won't make that mistake again. She's growing up and Kailani makes her happy. She's a good kid. A good influence on your sister as well, trust me."
"I think Kailani is a sweet kid too, but I'm more concerned about Dad ruining the entire family over a little post announcing Luce's relationship status. I, for one, do not want to make a scene over your separation, but he's already called Aunt Delilah...We all know she's homophobic." Frannie mumbled, sipping her coffee and turning towards the window.
