At lunch I sit next to Kenny again, he is surprisingly funny. He tells a lot of blunt, out-of-pocket jokes that make me giggle. Every time I laugh at his jokes he looks proud of himself... It's kinda cute if I'm being honest...

Just to be clear, I am not falling for him or anything like that. I can admire someone's cuteness without being attracted to them. I just think he is cool. Thats all.

"Hey, Mar, do you always pack your own lunch?" Kenny rests his head on his hand as he talks to me.

"I do... Did you just call me Mar?"

"I did. Marjorine has too many syllables. It's a fun nickname, right?"

"It is..."

"Then I'll keep using it."

"Okay..."

"Anyway, you pack your lunch every day, does that mean you make the stuff you bring too? Like those homemade cookies and your sandwiches?"

"Yep! I actually really enjoy cooking. I have a lot of fun preparing lunch every night. Even just chopping up the veggies is fun."

Cartman elbows Kenny, "See? She's pretty and she can cook. What more would you want?"

Kenny quickly shoots him a death stare and then returns to looking at me.

"Jesus, dude. Chill out."

Lunch is a lot more interesting with them at the table

-

"Karen!" I wave as I run over to Karen, who is sitting in the same spot on the grass.

"Marjorine! How are you?"

"I'm good! It was a long day but at least the weather is nice! What about you?"

"I'm doing good too. I got an A on my math test. Which might not seem like it's that impressive for a freshman but I never get A's so this was nice."

"Good job! I completely understand, I can't get good math grades to save my life."

We both laugh. I'm sitting in the spring grass, laughing with a friend. It's been so long since I was able to say I had a friend like this.

Karen looks out at the street, probably looking for her ride.

"Do your parents pick you up?"

"No... My brothers do."

"You have brothers?"

"Yeah. Two of them. One of my brothers goes here and the other goes to the college down the road. That's why it takes so long for them to pick me up, they have to go meet at the college and get the car sorted out. My brother isn't allowed to drive alone so my other brother has to get over there and get in the car with him."

"Why don't you just go with him?"

"When I was little I broke my ankle. We couldn't afford to get it fixed very well so now I can't walk very long distances like that. I'm hoping to get it fixed with surgery when I'm older though."

"I hope so too. It must suck having to live with limited walking ability."

"I just remind myself that some people have it worse. I'm lucky my ankle still works at all. I've come to terms with it."

"Well, that's good! Keep looking on the bright side."

She stands up when she sees a truck pulling into the school. "You better keep looking on the bright side too. I'll see you around!"

I wave as she leaves again. Poor girl... I don't know what it is, but something makes me want to look after her. Like a little sister I never had.
