Chapter 43

"I guess I didn't... that's probably the case..."

"Once you nurse him back to health you guys need to have a serious talk. This whole situation really messed him up."

"Did it?"

"Yeah. He even did that project thing alone. He went to the shelter the other day and worked as two people. He overdid it. That's probably why he got sick."

"He wasn't with Nicole?"

"Who?"

I put my hand to my forehead. "Karen this is my fault..."

"What do you mean? Marjorine?"

I go back to Kenny's room and sit on his bed. I take his warm hand.

"I'm sorry, Kenny..."

He's sleeping... I'll have to apologize properly when he gets better.

Once the soup is done I give some to Karen and bring the rest to Kenny's room. I nudge him to wake him up.

"Kenny, you need to eat. Open your mouth and I'll feed it to you."

Feeding him soup was a lot harder than I had predicted, but he was able to eat it all and drink some water.

He falls back asleep and I change his cold pack again. His temperature has gone down two degrees... he's gonna be okay.

I sit on my knees on the floor and watch him sleep. I need to make sure he's okay. I rest my head on the side of his bed and accidentally fall asleep while monitoring him.

I wake up, and when I realize where I am I quickly check the time, it's morning.

"Shit... he needs his next dose of medicine..."

"Already took it."

I look up to see Kenny sitting upright, looking down at me.

"Kenny! Are you feeling okay?!" I put my hand to his forehead, his fever has gone down for sure.

"I am... thanks to you..."

I look at him and tears start to fall from my eyes. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry!"

"For what?"

"I was being too harsh, we should've worked out our issues together but I sent you away and now you're sick and it's all my fault and I keep-"

He puts a hand on my mouth. "It's okay."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. The rambling is cute but my head still hurts so say what you want to say in less words so I can keep up."

"I love you."

"You do?"

"So much..."

He smiles at me, "So are we back together?"

"If you'll take me back..."

"I will. I love you too, Mar."

He coughs again.

"Let me change your cold pack, and I'll get another rag. Oh and some water!" I rush out and grab the rag and water.

"Drink this, I'm gonna lift your shirt to wipe you down again."

I lift his shirt, his chest is soaked, "Kenny, your fever broke."

"Is that a good thing?"

"Yes, it means your fever is going away... I'm so glad... I was worried you would need to go to the hospital..."

"Who needs a hospital when I have you. Thank you for taking care of me. The soup was delicious."

"Did you know I was here? You seemed really out of it."

"I did. Knowing you were here is what made me want to get better. So not only did your aid help, but you being here helped so much."

"Corny."

"Sorry."
