"You would be willing to do that for us?"

"I would! I love cooking."

"Then I'll text him right now! He will probably appreciate it."

She pulls out her phone and taps on it for a bit while my nails dry.

"Okay! He said that works, he also told me to thank you, so thanks!"

"Perfect! Then when I'm done painting your nails we can go to the store and get some stuff."

"Oh... Uhm... I don't actually have very much money..."

"That's okay! I have enough to buy ingredients for a meal for four people."

"Four?"

"Your brother might be hungry when he gets back, right? We should save him some."

"Okay! Then let's do it! What do you want to cook? Kraft mac and cheese? Or maybe some banquet meals?"

I laugh, "No. I'll make you guys something a little bit fancier. Have you ever had lemon salmon with a goat cheese salad?"

"I don't understand half of that. It sounds fancy though!"

"It is. My mom makes it every now and then when we are celebrating something. It's really yummy."

"Then we should have that! My brothers will lose their minds if they see a dish like that!"

"Then let's blow them away, okay? You can help me. I think they would love it if you helped make them a yummy meal."

"I agree!"

I paint her nails as we talk more about the dinner we plan to make. We decide to go all out. We are gonna buy some nice looking (but cheap) wine glasses to put orange juice in, and some nice-looking dishes. Also, she wants to get a centerpiece. Flowers or something. This is actually a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

-

We go to the Whole Foods down the street. She runs around the store grabbing decorations, like a tablecloth and some nice napkins. I work on getting all the ingredients we might need.

She is so excited. It's adorable. I haven't seen her smile this big before. She must really love her brothers. She keeps talking about how much they'll love the meal.

-

When we get home I set the oven to preheat. Karen starts setting out her fancy table setup. This whole thing ended up costing me $150 but it's worth it to see her this happy. I get a monthly allowance so it isn't a problem for me to spend like this every now and then.

She sets up a white tablecloth on her circle dining table. In the middle, she puts out an arrangement of fake flowers. She puts napkins in front of each seat with a knife and a fork on them. Then, the finishing touch, the fancy-looking wine glasses we got. It actually looks really nice. Almost like a restaurant.

"Aww! I chipped my nail polish!"

"I guess you were working too fast. I can repaint it after dinner if you want."

"Okay!"

She runs up to me and peaks over my shoulder. I'm cutting up the contents of the salad.

"Do you need help with anything, Marjorine?"

"Hmm... Well, the salmon is in the oven and the salad is almost done... Oh! Can you crumble this goat cheese? We want it in small chunks for the salad. You can just use your hands. Pour them into this bowl when you're done."

"Okay!" She runs to her bathroom to wash her hands and then she starts crumbling the cheese.

I can smell the salmon, it smells delicious.

Karen's oldest brother comes over and leans over the counter. "Marjorine, that smells so good... How did you learn to cook like this?"

I smile at him and flex my bicep, "Military training camp!"

He laughs, "Alright, keep your secrets. I'm looking forward to tasting it."

"It'll be about 30 minutes now."

"Got it." He goes back to the couch. Her family is really nice.
